Traffic Calming

Well – another myth about “benefit” bites the dust! Just an introduction of even more hazards which cancel out any perceived benefit from a reduced speed. A true cyclists will appreciate the dangers and not be in favour!

Let’s look at two types and think best to treat as separate threads

Width Restriction or Pinch Points

Traffic throttles, chicanes, centre islands are supposed to slow traffic and make it easier for pedestrians to cross – in theory

In reality :furious: :censored: :? – a nasty pinch point and one which has very little effect on speed – and all these really do is give a cyclist very little space and time for manoeuvre – and I’d say a high percentage of cyclist injuries  :( occurred at these direst of censored: dire road engineering. Too many driver overtake the cyclist just on approach to these – this is where the hand scrapes, wobbles, falls all occur – every day…some with very serious consequences,
 :(

Again COAST awareness on both sides can help!

At traffic throttles and chicanes – signal and approach in the primary position – this helps prevent the dangerous overtake – but you need to do this in fair time – not too early and not too late. – COA and plan by ST

DO NOT Squeeze through if traffic is coming towards you. STOP! :stop: And obey the priority halt signs as well – which apply to all road users on wheels! :)

Centre islands are a little more difficult as drivers can overtake regardless of your position and cut in in front to the islands :x . Lot of drivers receive an undue charge if we manage to cop this one :D – as this numpty type do this to other car drivers as well as cyclists.,

Cyclists have a slightly better get out clause than the driver in this silly overtake cut-in situation as a move to the secondary position can defend you.

Some do have a cycle bye-pass lane – so use them if they make life easier
