Traffic Jamming

Traffic Jamming is where cyclists really begin to have fun!

As bikes can manoeuvre much better around congested streets!

However, it requires great skill and care to do this safely and legally! :o

Most jams are fits and starts where traffic flows from one jam to the next one in peak rush hours and overall speeds are low as we all know as drivers. Skilled cyclists, bikers, can maintain a constantly but higher average speed by traffic jamming. :D

So what is traffic jamming? Has ol' IG finally flipped? :?

Basically it draws on all your COAST skills  – positioning, scanning and looking well ahead – judging distances and passing stationary traffic

So – if your speed matches the flow of the slow moving traffic – adopt the primary position and whilst you should not impede driver progress  – if and only if a move to secondary will mean "leapfrogging" and "weaverbirding" and compromise safety based on the condition you are in – stick to the primary position and maintain that steady speed within the flow of fairly slow moving traffic :P

You need high cadence and good and frequent use of gears – so only for those who have perfected skills in interests of safety.

Low gear for quick starts and high gear to maintain position and cadence. Always look ahead, glance back – be aware of traffic around you and keep a finger over the rear brakes.

This is where COAST really applies by the way

look ahead – anticipate traffic and modify your speed accordingly – and basically by doing this – you make progress by minimising the stops as you have matched yourself to the hazards.

Take with a chuckle or a grain of salt
Drive without COAST and it's all your own fault!

A SMILE is a curve that sets everything straight (P Diller).

A Smiley Per post

Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon - but driving with a smile and a COAST calm mind.
