I do a bit of off road cycling. I'm not a distance person, I like riding up the hill and then finding the fastest toughest route down - handy then that I live near the north downs. Anyway talking to a fitness lecturer friend ended up with me buying a heart rate monitor.

Net result I'm about 10% quicker than before.

Essentially when I think I'm shagged out my monitor often dissagrees and I know its a case of resetting my breathing and pace. Alternatively I've also been riding hard and been unwittingly close to the danger zone (mid 30s not hugely fit).

my advice is if you like your riding extreme - get a monitor as it could be you passing out.
