Starts Tuesday. Boonen is taking part and looks like a good field this time.

sixteen teams and some of the CLEAN big names.. Merckxx, Nuyens, Rogers, Kloden as well as Boonen.

So what's the route?

Starts Glasgow - fairly gentle terrain to Castle Douglas and opening stage will be more "tactic" .. I think

Stage Two - Starts Blackpool and goes up to Clihteroe, Waddington, Forest of Bowland before passing through Southport and ending in Liverpool. Hills "gentle" but "twisty around there" and the race will suit sprinters per CW.

Stage Three - Bradford -Sheffield. Nips into the steep hills around Sheffiield before the fast descent into Sheffield.

Stage Four - Wolverhampton -Brimingham Flat - but will test out the sprinters per the experts in CW

Stage Five - Rochester- Canterbury. Flat and bunching expected

Stage Six - Greenwich Park to the Mall. Promises to be a "fast and furious finale" per CW.

Seems a good route planned. Let's just hope we have no more scandals

In fact his wife and children took this selection

Britain's Roger Hammond won this stage and by all accounts - the three leaders were well ahead of the field at they hit Waddington Fell.

I have been seriously informed by the 10 year old who took these photos that the blur is "intended as it shows off the speedy matters!"

Bless!

What did strike the Lancs Hillbillies in the family was the singular lack of crowds lining the route.

We really do need to make more of this event and the sport in general if we are to enthuse a real "BUG" to grab people and inspire to ride.

As for my training... been out and about. Mad Doc and Willi are taking part in the Cumberland Challenge tomorrow. They think it will give them the edge on the family "adventure" for Leukemia Reearch.

rather a c*ck up today...

Quote:
The race left the start line in Rochester on time but due to a misunderstanding in directions the race took the wrong exit from a roundabout as they rode a parade lap through the town. Subsequently the race was stopped for around 25 minutes as the convoy and riders re-assembled. Fortunately the rain hadn't started at this point. After the race was officially started it became apparent that a number of teams were not prepared to race and the CSC team went to the front and rode "piano" between 18 and 22 mph.

Seems they had a lot of problems overall.

Swiss Willi, Bob and their pals in Lancashire Hills say that the notices warning of the race were small and easily missed. They say householders were not even given any letter detailing approximated ride past and as a result one bloke nearly reversed out of his driveway and the first he knew about the race was when the motorcyclist team clearing the route in advance stopped him.

CW is scathing: the rolling road closure does not seem tp be working as traffic found its way onto the course and there was a go-slow protest on the fifth stage which resulted in a late finish.

Boonen reckoned he had too many dangerous near-misses and the final stage .. two motorbike outriders crashed and five spectators needed hospital treatment. CW reckons iin its piece that this was an "accident waiting to happen as the signs were placed to close to the turning into the Mall. The piece also criticises the lack of warning given to the riders who were just ten minutes behind the incident.

CW editor says lessons must be learned from this before we host next year's Tour de France stage and agree - we really do need to close roads up for this stage and the ToB as much as we can.

Of course it's difficult to close off the routes in the big cities...but if we want starts and finish lines in our major towns - then obviously there has to be better liaison and planning with the police, highways agencies and councils than appears to be the case.

Of course - this race is only in its third year and clearly there's a need to address the problems - especially if we want to establish the event and promote the sport as cool, speedy - which in turn gets bums on saddles and that bug to bite!

This week's CW reflects on the "ToB" and lessons to be learned.

The incident on the Mall. The motorcylcist was only at 15 mph.. and people still needed hospital treatment. Rider made a mistake and turned into the deviation sign.

Relf (route manager) wants a National Escort Teamn to operate the rolling road closures. Yeah.. can agree - it;s a risky matter anyway to do this and ToB this year was too "ad hoc" which also caused confusion,

Let's just say that if they routed through our patch .. we would ask some specific questions to make sure it ran smoothly. Tour de France and Suisse have gendarme front and back and ensure straddlers have an escort.

Advance warning should be given so that gridlock does not occur. And we simply have to get the word out of road cloures and much better advance notice of stages to all who may be affected by the routes well in advance. I do know from Willi and Bob that no notice was passed to householders along the route through Lancs Hills. They live there and were aware because they ride and follow the sport with enthusiasm.

Andy Relf was critical of the police forces involved .. stating

Quote:

The were inexperienced at handling a rolling road closure

Well :scratchchin: I will agree .. we are very" raw green" at this.. and yes - we need to work on the strategy to get it 100% correct and learn from errors made in this recent race.

My advice. (and will write to this guy) . get the publicity as priority to bring to attention and drum up support. Liaise very closely with the police and local councils along the prooposed route. Make sure they know exactly what is required and things will pan out accordingly

ToB was so successful in Lancs Hills that the planners intend to run a repeat stage next year.
