I use the same technique, something I picked up when riding bikes, however quite frequently I find the oncoming driver just pulls out and heads towards you anyway. If they do not get the hint then there are several things I might do depending on the exact situation some of them being somewhat more confrontational than others but all with safety as a priority.

I generally do give way if they are going to be first 'into the pipe' btw, it is usually quicker in the end anyway.

Toltec - possibly from my push-bike days too - something like better to be a live coward plus it's easier to get out of the way of an idiot than to have insurance companies give up and split the accident 50/50.

Well, the 3rd party has finally accepted 100% liability. It would have taken very little time except my insurance company basically did nothing at all for most of the time!

Hey 4 months of buggering about isn't bad for going through your own insurance. I've had my car off the road for 6 months due to Churchill refusing to authorise repairs after a crash which the other guy took full liability for, and Equity Red Star still owe me over £1200 for repairs I ended up paying for myself in late 2005.

Next time, go through a 3rd party no win no fee claims handling place. Helphire are very good, though they do charge a tenner for their services (in the form of insurance against the 3rd partys insurance not coughing up), in fact these days, a lot of the insurance companies just pass your claim onto them anyway once they've decided it's a non-faulter.
