Was on the motorway today, tootling along at a fairly respectable 55mph or so, car goes to pass me on lane 2. He was about 5 car lengths or so from me in lane 2 when something dropped off the car, pushed into the road, pushed the rear of the car into the air momentarily, it bounced back down, piece of exhuast comes flying at me, so I decide to brake a bit and steer around it... Doubt it was a near miss, I had a long enough time to hit the hazards, but I'm sure it was a near miss for the guy in the golf that lost it, change of underwear required no doubt! He continued for a while in lane 2, and eventually moved onto the hard shoulder.

It crossed my mind to stop too, because I'd seen the whole thing, but on the other hand what use would I have been stopping. It actually just looked like the mid section of the exhaust, but I would have been concerned about any other damage to the car.

Should I have stopped to check he was okay and stuff, or was I right to just keep going? I know you're not supposed to stop on the hard shoulder except in emergencies and stuff. Guess thats why I'm asking :)

Cheers

I expect that would class as an emergency, never know what else might have happened to the car or if someone else might hit the thing that fell off, etc.

But these days of enforcement for the sake of enforcement I doubt many people would consider stopping unless they were directly involved in an accident.

Would I have stopped? I don't know. I might do if I didn't have somewhere to be.

As Ziltro said - stop to help - some people ( except trafpols) might get het up - other hand - Golf man might be distressed and need help to GTF out of his car and up the bank till help arrived . Been there , done that and got the T shirt - it's a split second decision - and once made - you can't alter your first stance. But - hey , nice to see some one with so little driving experience show so much concern for safety.Just be aware that in stoping you risk your own safety ----i would suggest that in any case you start looking out for a good quality safety vest - so that if you do stop , you can be seen.
