There is a dirt bike track very near me and I have heard the tragic news that one of the chaps taking part last Saturday had an accident and died.

Now I assume that dirt biking must be a lot of fun, and must teach masses about balance and control of skids. I would assume this mass of knowledge and improved skills and ability, help in all bike control on the roads ? Is this true ? Or are the skills learnt so different that they are rarely used on the road ?

I had a road modified crosser for a couple of years, I did use it off road, if not for motocross, and that did help one winter when the roads were covered in packed snow.

I suspect it is a bit like car handling & skid pan training, it does not improve your driving as such but does help you cope with bad conditions or potential loss of control.

I also assume that the reactions are far quicker with those that practice than those that don't but I need to find research into this.
I certainly feel that that instant reaction you automatically apply when you feel the car moving must likely happen to with a bike.
When I was doing my bike training the very first emergency practice stop was so very wet that I started to slide and I just un-braked and reapplied and he was impressed as it was just automatic. So maybe some skills transfer and some abilities cross vehicles too.

To me that sounds like a cross transfer of cadence braking - well done for having the presence of mind to do it .I find that on a car fitted with ABS ,I can beat ABS partially , in normal weather( very seldom comes on -except on manhole lids) , and in snow - totally .
