Sad case headlined the Bolton press and featured in the Manchester and Lancashire press last night.
Amanada Smith reported for "BEN"
The police officer skidded into the rear of a parked lorry whilst on a training exercise on the Bolton Ring Road -Crompton Way, Astley Bridge to Moss Bank Way. (This, as I understand from one of my sisters, used to be 50 mph road and has been reduced to 40 mph and 30 mphin parts and one very short stretch remained at 50mph; my sister says the Gatso went up shortly after the limit change a bout four years ago.)
Apparently the officers were being trained as to how to escort VIP convoys and the officer was helping to flank three large black cars.
The incident occurred at 10.20 am on Wednesday. Death was instant and I understand the road was closed in each direction immediately. I heard that the road had been closed on national radio too.
It only re- opened late on Wednesday evening.
Eye Witness per paper's report wrote:
I heard a very loud bang and went out to see if I could help. My colleague shouted that he is a qualified first aider - but there were already lots of police there.. six or seven motorbikes.
Ambulances, fire engines and more police cars arrived very quickly on the scene
The police officer was aged 33. He joined GMP in 1999 and was a motorcycle officer. He had a wife and a two year tot.
GMP spokesperson wrote:
The motorcycle officer was on duty when he was in collision with a stationary HGV in Crompton Way at 10. a.m. No one else was injured. An investigation into the cause of this collision is on-going.
There is a photo in the paper... will scan it later.
Looks to me like there is a bus stop.. and a bend - fairly sharp. The lolly here looks like 40 mph. The parked up HGV would not have helped. Think I can make out double yellows in the photo - but it's not clear.
