This topic relates to the Safe Speed page: "TRL421".

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/trl421.html

The Safe Speed page examines some more utterly bizarre claims made by the TRL about speed and accidents.

The findings are interpreted as the effect of different drivers driving at different speeds down the same road. The faster they drive the more accidents they have. In reality though, the statistics show the efect of the same driver (or standard set of drivers) driving down different roads with different 50% percentile speeds. This implies that the accident rate increases with the percentile speed of the road, not the speed of the driver.

The most obvious finding from the study is "if you want to reduce accident rates, build better roads".
