Am a total athiest, as I believe was Paul, but total respect and bless him. without invoking any sky fairies. A total LEGEND in road safety research. I am totally stunned a truly great man has died so young - I hope someone or a decent group nearly as dedicated can take up the mantle? Condolences to Claire and Pauls family, He was a great man. |

You know when you wake up, and just for a few seconds, you don't remember anything? That was me this morning. Then I did remember. How I wish I'd just dreamt it. I still can't believe it. Paul was posting completely normally earlier that evening. Just awful and so sickeningly sudden. |

I have watched safespeed evolve over several years and have been more and more impressed with the momentum and results it is starting to achieve. I did send Paul a cheque once, to support him, but never 'joined' his campaign. My thoughts are now with his loved ones, this is a terrible tragedy for any family. In Paul's case it's a double blow, as he seemed to represent the only force that stood between the deadly stupidity of our countries administration and increased death and suffering (including lost livelihoods) associated with our primary transport system (the road network). I genuinely fear what is to come without a man of Paul's intellect, integrity and patience acting in opposition to the establishment 'experts'. Paul, I never met you, but you will be missed terribly. To your loved ones and friends I offer my deepest sympathy. |

I was out on our office Christmas lunch yesterday so only just logged in to see this dreadful - terribly sad - news. My sincere sympathy and condolences to Claire and Paul's friends and family. Paul's commitment to the SafeSpeed cause has been a shining example of altruism; he committed his life to fight for his beliefs. RIP Paul Smith. Tim |

I'm stunned and truly saddened. I consider myself privileged to have met Paul. In person one could understand why he was so successful in bravely taking on the establishment. Always calm and rational against shrill opposition. Paul was a man of integrity and is a true loss not just to the cause of road safety but to the world at large. An example to us all. My thoughts are with his family. |

I am stunned. What a terrible loss. Paul was one of those rare people with the courage of his convictions to promote an important cause in the face of continued ridicule and abuse from the establishment. Never once did one feel he was doing it for personal gain; quite the reverse at times. If only our politicians had a fraction of his integrity. |

Claire, we've never met; I only met Paul once, spent a morning in London about 18 months ago when he was in the camper. We got lunch, and went t-shirt shopping 'cause he was out of clean clothes! I thought he was a top bloke, and it was always good to see him upsetting the liars and politicians. I can't think of anything useful to say really, other than that my thoughts are with you. Sincere condolances to Paul's family & friends. He was one of that rare breed of British 'mavericks', and I mean that in the nicest way possible. He was sorely needed, and will be sadly missed. |

Shocking news, tragic. I have been a SafeSpeed member for several years and seen Paul's excellent work gaining credibility against the idiots in government. Also the second time in 12 months that somebody I respect has died suddenly of a heart attack. We should all 'seize the day'. My condolences..... |

Such a shock to hear the news. Spoke to Paul once on the phone and can't believe I won't get the opportunity to meet him in person now. Condolences to all his family at this very sad time and R.I.P. Paul, i'm sure your work will continue going from strenth to strength. Andrew |

Been lurking on the site for around 3 years and only recently started posting. In that time I have come to regard both Paul and many of the regular posters with great respect and admiration. My thoughts and condolencies are with all of you who supported Paul and Safespeed at your time of loss. Like Fred Hill, Paul was someone who eventually gave us his life fighting for common sense in a world largely run by fools. May Paul Rest in Peace and may the campaign that he founded grow from strength to strength and be completely successful as a fitting monument to him. |

Shit, it's all so sudden. Makes you realise that you can never take life for granted, even if you don't engage in dangerous activities...hard to believe that he could be here normally one hour and then gone the next. RIP.

Could there ever be a man with so many friends that he never met? Paul was a bright, talented and focussed campaigner. He's done more for road safety in the last 6 years than anyone else can possibly hope to in the next 20. I'm sad that I never met him face to face. thoughts are with his family and friends. Paul's fight WILL go on. |
