I've never had sat nav or considered spending my own money on it. I seem to get by fine with a road atlas and some multimap print outs.

My current car does however have sat nav and I have to say that it's useful.....but I still wouldn't spend my own money on it.

RoTM An "overly obedient" German driver followed his car's satnav system's instructions to "Turn right now!" and duly exited the highway "about 30 metres before the crossing he was meant to take" before piling headlong into a portaloo, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Mind you, this is not simply a case of a moment's lapse in concentration: before destroying the toilet, the bloke "drove his sport utility vehicle off the road into a building site", then took it "up a stairway" before totalling said convenience.

The cybernetic capabilities of the WC are not noted, but there is the suspicion that the satnav was acting under instructions to deliver its victim to the nearest man-eating dunny.

Mercifully, the driver's unswerving obedience to his electronic master resulted in the toilet being instantly disabled. His car was also damaged and he copped a fine for his trouble. ®

Now is that Sat Nav or Old Age as the accident causation. :roll:
Or simply refused to believe the Sat nav was fallible! :oops:

Just to have my sixpennorth
Drove to Cheshire for a course last week and saw quite a lot of sat-navs in vehicles. Problem's in no particular order, at night time on someones dash a distraction for other drivers who wonder what it is, Drivers having their vision obstructed, drivers being distracted and my personal favourite the muppet who switched lanes on me approaching a roundabout and then stopped to read said device (safespeed safe distance so I didn't hit them haha!) - For safety's sake they should be banned

What? they're that common now that it should be bloody obvious, just like Road Angels (You can spot the blue oval glow half a mile away) and Magic Trees and so on. Or are you saying that any unusual and illuminated feature in a car that is visible from outside should be banned. Should the (at the time) new blue instrument lighting that VW introduced have been banned. what about the kid in the back seat with a PSP?

Because of course if they were trying to read a paper map they would have taken that roundabout perfectly and at no point have been holding onto their wheel with 3 fingers, as they try to keep the map straight and negotiate a roundabout.

Question: My neighbour was drilling a hole in his wall the other day and electrocuted himself as he drilled into the mains. Should drills be banned too?

No, this is self-regulating as your neighbour is now dead and cannot do it again.

"A "pillars of normal size can hide bikes, we hear.
It's not on to drive with a phone in one hand - to distracting.
So then it's OK to stick something the same size in the middle of your windscreen and drive around with a "hole " in your forward vision, and then to have it distract your attention with a screen in your vision path ?

Thats what i'm seeing more and more of on the roads.


I'm not against Sat Nav- think it's a great idea ,especially for business drivers ( eg service engineers ) trying to navigate unknown suburbia on their own.
What i'm against is the placement of such items , with total regard to driver observation .

Reading the road is like reading a book of pictures - you get the big picture from the little ones.
So when one little picture is torn out - the story line could change abruptly( that thing you missed, could be a tin can, or a little old lady, or a child or even a bike -the possibilities are endless)

Depends on the specific installation BUT

An A pillar is an obstruction that fills the entire visible area vertically, a satnav is typically smaller than a rear view mirror.

So it may obscure part of the bike's front wheel (if positioned on the dashboard) but the whole bike, I don't think so.

Of course, one good position for a satnav is actually on the A-Pillar! Easy to see without obstructing forward vision at all.

Sorry - mate - my experience - a 4(inch) by 2 (inch) blocking part of the main windscreen - how many bikes need to be either partialy or totally obscured before you and your defendants back down???

ANYTHING THAT OBSCURES ALL OR PART OF THE WINDSCREEN IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE PROSECUTED.(EG SAT NAV SUCKER IN MIDDLE OF SCREEN, SAT NAV IN LOWER SCREEN) -- PERHAPS i need to get my camera out --but then in doing so i fall into the danger trap :twisted:

Anything? Rear view mirrors, windscreen wipers, tax discs, those patches of unswept glass that can quickly become completely opaque when driving in poor weather, reflections of the car interior, the black dotted border all the way around the screen itself...

Some drivers do appear to throw common sense and the preservation of forward visibility out the *ahem* window when placing their sat navs, but without spending time sat in the drivers seat with your head in exactly the same position as the driver and seeing exactly how much/little of your forward vision is then obscured by each individual setup, it's a bit of a stretch to argue that they're all a problem.

Indeed. Take the most common installation position which is in the centre of the dashboard.

On my car, when I had a satnav there it obscured my view of... the bonnet! If there was a biker in the area obscured by that satnav then I have somewhat bigger problems with my observation.

Of course if I were to let a 4'2" old lady drive the car with the satnav in that position, then it would block a significant amount of the forward view.

Even so, improper installations causing safety hazards is not a reason to ban something, otherwise you would have to ban shelves.

(My current satnav is installed in a double DIN radio slot, obscuring nothing)

Wish that i could have taken photos in past week -would have made a nice rougues gallery - as far as i could see commensense had flown out of the window - a high percentage of the windscreen was blotted out with these "SAFETY AIDS"--AND anything could have been in front of them - WOULD THEY HAVE SEEN IT - NOT ON SAT NAV- ANSWER ----NOOOOOO

At least he only killed himself through his own carelessness! :oops:

The placement of the device might be obscuring for one driver and NOT for another - I am taller than some drivers, and the rear view mirrors on some vehicles are a hazard!

As to distraction?
ANYTHING can distract a driver who is apt to be distracted. At the end of the day, you have to judge the driving, NOT the perceived distraction. A driver WITHOUT SatNav who is lost can be a bigger hazard than one who uses the device sensibly.

ME? I dont feel the cost is justifiable for me, so I get by without one! :wink: Same applies to a mobile phone - I have one, charged up in the car, and never switched on except in an emergency - such as my wife running out of credit! :roll:

On the obstruction argument, and I do accept that some people install them in really dumb places, do we not already have laws in place to prevent this.

I thought the construction and use regulations had clauses about obstructing parts of the windscreen. I know it's about the size of a 10p for Zone A, not so sure about Zone B.

Now ok, most people will just remove them for the MOT (if only to stop the testers from nicking it!) but in theory you could be pulled at any time and charged with a specific offence.

Oh look we're back to the same old problem. Lack of police on the roads.

2. I said rear view mirrors, not wing mirrors-you know, those mirrors that are usually fixed to the inside of the windscreen...
