Motorists are set for more frustration on the streets of London.
Mayor Ken Livingstone wants to install 1,800 new traffic lights on the capital's roads in the next two years.
The schemes are contained in the Transport for London works programme and will add to the 5,827 systems already in place.
Roger Evans, London Assembly Conservative spokesman on transport, said: "These new figures reveal the true extent of the Mayor's road-blocking plans.
"He has presided over a gridlocked London, making the lives of millions of commuters a misery through his ill-thought out plans, and constant anti-car agenda.
"It seems his 'Gridlock Ken' sobriquet is well suited."
Mr Evans added: "Over the past six years, Ken has treated London like a giant Lego set, raining havoc at will, and charging people for the pleasure.
"He promised to get London moving, but the statistics say otherwise: all we are moving towards is more and more gridlock."
He must be iching for an increase of coverage of the kengestion charge zone.
