Hi, travelling north on M6 today, raining fairly heavily so you need to concentrate on what is around you a bit more. Most people doing around 60mph, 2nd and 3rd lanes only slightly faster as reasonably busy.

Just before Junction 29 Northbound scammervan sat under bridge offset from vision due to its siting, the spray, the shadow of bridge. Camera out at rear on tripod, presumably scammerman sat inside swiping everything.

No speed check signage on road or at back of van, rear of van looks like a builders van with orange and yellow chequers.

As you pass you automatically check your speed and seeing it at the last minute I am surprised that no one in front braked fast and caused an accident on the slippy road as these days even though you are in the limit you wonder if you have missed a sign change somewhere.

He was there from 12.30 and was just packing up at 4.45pm on my way back.

Wonder how the cash bucket filled up from this one today.

Definitely no need for a speed camera to be there, just a means of filling the coffers.

I saw him as well. It was just before the rain and I was doing between 70/80 in the outside lane and didn't notice him until I was on top of him.
In that I had seen a van under the bridge but had come to the conclusion it had broken down, then getting in a position to read its sides I braked and looked at my speedo. You are correct in the fact that most peoples brake lights came on on seeing him but it just shows that everybody was driving to the conditions and in that nobody was surprised by the braking and didn't rear-end anyone.
I think it was an ANPR exercise, otherwise the speed cam signage would have to have been up...surely.

If this was a speed camera van, it looks like Lancashire Camera Partnership have had a change, as they never used to speed check the motorways (although I have seen them monitoring roadworks on the M55 in the past). There is often (bank holidays and when party conferences are on at Blackpool) ANPR used around the M6/M55 junction but they usually have the van hidden with a camera over each lane.

They were just before Jnc 30 North (M61) on Sat afternoon under the M61 flyover (to stop them getting wet, bless em... )

It was APNR.

Increased terrorist threat level = more ANPR on motorways.

No definitely do not think it was ANPR, the gun thingy was mounted on a tripod at the rear, hard to see unless you were on the inside lane. There was only one of them, it was like a square box, say 10 inches x 4 inches x 6inches high, I am sure I have seen the police using them in Merseyside before the scamera pratnership was setup. I could be wrong though. There was only one camera. On the way back saw the side of the van in more light, it was the scamera pratnership, big blue letters across the top panel.

I believe under the new regs that they do not have to put up any signage to scam. Hopefully someone can correct me if I am wrong.

PS anyone point me to a message that contains something like

they came for the jews and o one tried to save them,
then they came for the gypsies and no one saved them
then the teachers etc
then the speeders
then the smokers
then they came for me
and then there was no one left to save me

or something like this

Thanks

In Germany, the Nazis first came for the communists, and I did not speak up, because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak up, because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak up, because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I did not speak up, because I was not a Catholic.
Then they came for me... and by that time, there was no one to speak up for anyone.

For info, the van was (again) parked up under the bridge at about 10.15 on Sunday Evening monitoring a relatively quiet motorway. - Nothing to warn of a speed camera though until alongside; there were certainly no camera markings to the back of the van or on the road.

Cheers

I thought the new MIDAS system being rolled out had ANPR cameras, which can be used for road pricing apparently, or doesn't that part of the M6 have them? (Look out for MS3 variable message signs)

They were at J30 M6 again today about 11.00 - same place under the flyover.

Must be watching for something or someone specific - perhaps they've had a tip off Osama Bin Laden is travelling to visit his new in-laws

You forget - speed cameras are all in the name of child safety, and there are just SOOOOO many children wandering about on the M6. Slow down you dirty babykiller! If you want to speed, do it outside a school - no cameras there.

You all seem to say that the van was parked under the flyover on the M61 was it on the hard shoulder or on the grass verge as the thing as I see it is "if you parked like this" you would risk prosecution or has the law been changed to "exempt these vehicles".

Me thinks not!!!!!!!!!

from the edge of the motorway to the bridge pillar is a lot of space, this includes the hard shoulder and the van was still further back against the pillar.

They seem to think they can park up wherever they like pavements, half on road half on pavement, force pedestrians to walk into road to get round them, side roads, grass verges, behind bushes and trees etc
