Hi,

I just wanted to get some opinions on this:

My colleague knows a Chief Inspector of a regional constabulary in the UK. He has told my colleague, during an informal chat, that the force does no currently chase up speeding tickets if the owner of the car has named a foreign driver with a foreign address. I am referring to automatic speed tickets that have been posted to the owner, whose car has been photographed exceeding the national speed limit by a bridge mounted speed camera van.

The reason that they do not chase up these tickets is due to the cost and administration time.

Is this some kind of loophole? Does naming a foreign driver really mean that they will not chase up tickets?

Cheers

Major B.

It has certainly defeated the system in the past. However it is a risky and illegal strategy with a highly significant potential downside. See:

nice one, thanks for the reply. All in all, it's probably not worth lying for the sake of 3 points and a £60 fine...

Just out of interest, if the named foreign driver was an Australian with an Irish driving licence, what would the police do if he/she corroborated the story? Would it be possible to endorse an Irish licence? And would they be able to force the driver to accept a fine?

I was out in Paris last week, talking to an english guy who lives in France, short term. Every time he gets pulled by the french police, he claims he does not speak French.

I have not checked it out as yet, he claims there is NO agreement between UK & French to disclose drivers details. Hence the Loop Hole.

It gets worse, i have also met Truck drivers, whom are banned on their Uk licence, yet drive on their Irish License.

My dad used to drive a truck with R.O.I. plates on it. Everytime a speed camera flashed him he never heard anything about it   8-)

Hmm... from everything I've heard the French LOVE pulling British drivers. They write the number of Euros they want and if you don't pay it they impound your car. They will drive you to a cashpoint and when you've paid they drive off.

Never been pulled over there, despite a spending a vast amount of time driving in france trucks & bikes. My comment was based on a conversation with an english chap, who lives in France. So could not confirm either way, if his theory actually works.

As a biker, i regulary tour France, and actually find the police move towards the curb to let me pass, despite me having to increase the speed beyond the limit to overtake.

Give me French or German Traffic cop, anytime compared to a British one :!:

Austrian police, again is fine, Hungarian Police will fine you as soon as look at you.

I am pretty regular into crumlin, strange how despite N. Ireland being under same rules, they have no speed cameras in place, not that i have seen anyway.

Same over here. Belgian police seems to behave alike to foreigners (not only British).

My thought would be, name someone who doesn't exist but might well, and wouldn't speak English if he did. For example Giorgos Papadopoulos of Kifisia, Greece (you can't, and don't have to remember his address). If there were no Giorgos Papadopoulos (Papadoloupli?) in Kifisia, it would be a miracle of the order of no John Smiths in Durham, yet you can imagine the response Durham police might give to a phone call from Greece asking of the whereabouts of John Smith for the very serious matter of an unpaid speeding ticket.

To prove beyond reasonable doubt that Giorgos Papadopoulos was not driving is no easy matter.

I have heard urban myths of people getting away with this... shocking
