Hi all,

I was wondering if you could help me with a question.

What is the recommended distance car a must be from car b when stationary at a Traffic Light?

I usually use as a gudie the ability to see the car in fronts' tyres and a small peice of tarmac.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Don't think there is one is there?

On a hill assume the car in front is going to roll back when it starts, on the flat I'd say leave a space so that you dont feel you're too close.

If you're a bus driver though ensure that you can't get a playing card in the gap.

It is recommended by advanced motoring groups that you should be able to get round the vehicle in front, without reversing, if it breaks down. That's not a legal requirement though, and I don't THINK it's in the highway code.

Why do you ask?

Welcome to the forum! :D

I was taught to leave a gap large enough so as to be able to see the tyres and a bit of tarmac behind them.

Yeah, tyres and tarmac seems to be a generally used rule of thmub.

I was taught (by an ex police class 1 instructor) to be able to see (as a minimum) where the car in front's tyres touch the tarmac. This was mainly to give you room to steer around them, should they fail to move off.

Oh, and keep your wheels pointing straight ahead, so you don't get shunted into on-coming traffic if you get hit from behind (re-enforcing looking to the rear as well as the front when stationary).

Particulary important when turning right across traffic as well.
