simply the laser i used worked at night it worked in the rain no problem at all, the poster hampshieian IMO was implying that is you speed at night when it is wet the laser will not detect you, WRONG VERY WRONG

I hope you aren't suggesting that you used the laser speed detecting devices other than in accordance with the manufactures guidelines, which state the flooding of light from headlights and refraction from heavy rain will cause inaccurate readings, and thus the device should not be used at night or in heavy rain.

Lifted straight from the LTI 20:20 usage guidelines

TO clarify my opinion.

Heavy rain would introduce large errors into the speed calculation and reduce the range/accuracy significantly. Just look at the effect rain has on normal light.

Day or Night means nothing to the laser but at night not under street lights! How can the operator form the opinion you are speeding ,accuratley aim the scope at the target vehicle while being blinded by the headlights and get a reading. even if he gets a lucky hit I doubt he could read the numberplate

I cant see the health and safety allowing operators to stare through a telescope at a car on full beam, one blindness claim would wipe out the ill gotten gains :x

Either way If I was snapped under the above circumstances I would be having my day in court

1 * 1

yes working in rain would produce more error readings than fine weather, and maybe the focal length would be slightly reduced but that is all no difference to daytime working

as for health and safety so kind of you to be concerned  , but the sighting scope has a night time facility to reduce the glare, the monitor has a night time setting so its only really the same as driving, the headlights allow enough light in to capture the reg, as for a lucky hit 99.9 % of vehicles have a number plate between the headlights :bighand:

LTI 20 / 20 usage guidelines never heard of them, heard of the operations manual LTI 20 / 20 TSM Speedscope

We quibble of exact terminology, however both the page you state, and home office documents surrounding the type approval of these meters agree.

The point is of course largely academic, since a partnership wouldn't 'enforce' at these times because of the sparse financial pickings on offer. The 'target market' appears to be during the school runs, and to ensnare unwitting tourists.

Also, a bit off topic, but does seek to make my point. Have you noticed that cameras will only be present on motorway bridges only when traffic is free flowing, however all of the accidents I have ever witnessed on a motorway happen during heavy traffic flow when the speeds are well below the speed limit, and the talivans don't 'enforce' at these times.

By the way that's the royal you in the previous statement, I'm not having a go at you personally Camera operator.

PS, sorry if you have done so before, but could you elaborate on you new duties. What role does a 'civvy' have in ANPR?

I was thinking something similar

I drive a fair bit and have never seen a van out in the morning rush hour, sometimes in the evening but never in the morning.
Surely speeding drivers during rush hour are a greater danger than at midday - but that would involve paying overtime and reduce the profit from tickets.

Maybe to guarantee income they will start fining you more if you speed on an open road  :o

I have given up looking for vans overnight/ early morning and can relax ,enjoy the drive and concentrate on making progress safely :D

I wouldn't say a greater danger, I would say an absolute menace, and exactly the kinds of people that enforcement should be targeted at. Since to speed in rush hour/Heavy traffic you must have a complete disregard for conditions, other motorists, the highway code, probably driving dangerously etc. etc.

However these kinds of driver would be off the radar to a partnership since they would almost certainly not be correctly documented. And are so rare statistically that again, there is no profit to be made from catching them.

every phrase can be looked at in two ways,

firstly are you talking about general times or just motorway, if it is the later then i cannot comment as i never worked them :x ,

IMO parking a camera van is a deterrent for motorists to keep to the posted limit, if due to traffic flow ie rush hour, the traffic flow is heavy then that area is naturally traffic calmed so job done, nevertheless on my patch i worked outside a few schools, i would always attend at the start or end of the day when it was kick in / out time, an ideal time to catch up on paperwork :(

So then an empty van would have the same effect ---an old trick as used by southern police forces years ago -according to my info .(they used soon to be scrapped cars on the police posts on e.g M1)---no use for operational police duties - but they apparently earned their keep in safety terms .
But then the pratnership would not have any means of proving it was enforcing (was about to say influencing road safety - but that needs police not scams).

But for all the good the vans/cameras do in terms of road safety -we might as well place garden gnomes at these "accident sites "- that's what RTTM tells us .
