He went right past a PCSO who did NOTHING.

What do you think PCSOs are there to do - apart from make us believe that we have a police presence around?-might as well dress up gnomes in police uniforms

Oh that's harsh!

Well we swapped a beat officer for a PCSO - she might be easier on the eye, but the last two beat officers were tougher on crime.

Case of how well you deploy. We try to pair ours with a Bobby where we can - or use in areas where they at least give us back up and reduce some routines for us.

The problem arises when you try to replace a real officer with a PCSO as the yobs know their powers are limited - hence the need to deploy sensibly where they are of service and really feel they make that difference - else they become disillusioned and demotivated.

In Coniston, locals are trying to raise money to buy their local officer a laptop. With that sort of support, I think they are going to expect a police presence with REAL powers!
They are not the only ones being asked to invest, so this will become more widespread.
If Cumbria is merged with Lancashire, the public will be watching even more keenly that they get a fair crack of the whip so to speak!! 8-)

As a (sadly expanding) ex-cyclist who fully obeyed the rules of the road, and expected cars to treat me as an equal - give me space where I demanded it & not cut me up - "it's only a bike", yes, but I'm doing 30ish on a vehicle that can out turn, out brake & sometimes out accelerate yours. And if you hit me or pull into my space, (and they did) it's gonna hurt. I always had front & rear lighting, steady and flashing LED's on rear - 5 & 20w spots on front (was illegal as cyclist only allowed pathetic 3w - B.S.) I am REALLY glad to see that flashers are now legal, but should they not be legal in conjunction with a steady lamp? Better than nothing I suppose. Flashing fronts are a menace (especially the old green ones) as they are usually operated without a REAL headlamp by individuals lacking in common sense.
LED technology is now excellent with 1w LED's in common use - these are VERY bright. It's good to see it's now rated at candelas & not watts (why leds in general fell foul of the law previously) - strange that LED's are still technically illegal in motor vehicle lighting...

Having been driving for a few years now I am more than concerned at the utter lack of cycling skills around (remember the Cycling Proficiency Test?), I saw a young lad (14/15) cycling against the flow of traffic on a dual carriageway FAST lane tucked right into the central reservation and scaring the s**t out of oncoming motorists - oh, yeh, no lights.

And if some poor sod in a car or truck hit him, you know who'd get the blame... (and the nightmares!) :(

Read sometime ago that on an estate in coventry they raised the cash for a PC.-looks like the future for community beat policing.
As I said -few years ago we had two CBO's after a fight , now all we see is a CPSO -

I always think it a sad indictment that - like schools - we are relying on public goodwill to provide what should be provided as matter of efficient use of money already provided via various taxation formats.

Not that the help is unwelcome. Of course it is! But something within me says that we should be providing this from the cash we receive from both central and local government - and that if funds do not stretch to such essentials - then something is going wrong here. Of course - there are demands on a tight budget.....

I know this ..the Mad Cats know this... Paul knows this and even the JJ trio know this. But .......

...... Everything in life carries that opportunity cost, but even so... we have to be aware that Joe Public out there will tolerate so much and then lose patience ....

People (all present - including the JJ trio and cam op) pay their taxes and are expect to see ( and indeed are entitled to see) value for money and a fair spend of that cash they entrust to us.

Like to think we investigate properly and make sure any charges are laid fair and square.

Yes - agree - not enough cycling proficiency courses and a group of greenies made up of some very unpleasant and incompetent characters. Have a personal thing about unofficial critical mass which cause mega headaches...and are organised by this militia of idiots. (not prevalent here - but hear via grapevine.....)

Agreed absolutely. We all pay substantial amounts of tax in this country (well, those of us daft enough to work, anyway) yet where does it go? Schools are begging for charity for books, the police for computers.. Yet, there's still room for utter financial insanities like this one I saw on the BBC News website earlier today..
Quote:
A council official has been sacked from his job promoting racial harmony after he failed to disclose a conviction for people smuggling.

Bright Oduro-Kwateng, 49, was appointed as head of social inclusion at Newcastle City Council in May.

In July it emerged he had been jailed in 1998 for his part in a scam to smuggle people into the UK using passports in the names of dead babies.

He was suspended and has now been dismissed from the £60,000-a-year post.

60 Grand a year! for being "head of social inclusion"... What the f*ck is one of those? It's the same with my local council, they advertise jobs of the most specious utility, yet with massive salaries... Central government, ditto - anyone for the job of a "facilitator" at the No 10 spin unit, no apparent qualifications required, salary starts at £80K... And we can't do a single solitary thing about it! - other than emigrate... I spend an increasing part of my life in Spain and it ain't half getting crowded with pissed-off Brits bailing out!

Rant over... For now... :)
