at what speed would they clock u at ..eg 70 mph speed limit, if it clocked u doing 71 would u be fined with 3 points or is there a tiny bit leigh way.

In theory 71 could get you 3 points and a fine but the ACPO guidelines suggest a leeway of 10%+2 mph.

It very much depends on where you are. General trigger speeds that I have heard about (but don't quote me on this) is:

M6 in Cumbria and M4 in Wiltshire and (I think South Wales) - 79
North Wales - even less that 79
M6 toll - last I heard, it was 90
Generally elsewhere its 85 which is a general guidline for police at least.
Don't know about variable speed limit sections on M25/M42 but I'd take a good guess and reckon its 10% + 2 when the speed limit is 60 or less.

For NSL daul carriageways its much more likely to be 79 or less.
