My GPS camera detector bleeps at me at preset speeds if I want it to.

It doesn't have to be very intrusive, this light or beeper thingy that I’ve dreamed up.

I'm afraid you have been beaten to your dream years ago, tachographs have an LED indicator as standard to indicate an overspeed.

Thanks. I was referring to the whole, including a "system that could detect the condition in the first place" part, i.e. an on-line "speed map" database of the country and GPS long/lat locator, or networked/drive-by RF on limit signs, or whatever else it would entail. But yes, in principle, 'driving technology' is being introduced incrementally at an ever-increasing rate. I wonder where it will end?

Welcome back BW.

Thanks - I went out to get some coal before Christmas, and I got stuck in the bunker. They've only just let me out, honest!

They change the limits so often, that it would cost more to administer the changes. If my GPS is anything to go, it has a similiar systems already and is on many occasions inaccurate.

That is good reason to put the transponder of this notional system actually on the notification signs. That way, both visual and RF “devices of notification and location” (i.e. signs with tranponders) could be all immutably locked together, and a malfunction could be a defence, as a missing sign is today.

I'm not making any predictions here, because I don't know which way it'll run. But if you trace back a requirement to notify drivers of speed violations, this is where it leads.

If you had such a system on a vehicle, then that may be used for or against you. If the device was indicating a 40mph zone, yet the council had recently lowered the limit to 30, chinggggg, you're nicked!!!

..hence the scaremongerign headlines about the european galileo satellites which will give (supposedly) cm accuracy when fully launched.
