What don't work are outside lane merges, lane 4 into lane 3. Two spring to mind here - the top of the M621 and the M62 eastbound at the top of Windy Hill. You can virtually guarantee it every time that some numpty will be in the next lane doing aboug half your speed and you've got to ease right off and drop in behind if you don't make it before the chevrons.

Thats funny as I used to use both stetches of Mway every day and thought they worked pretty well - there is plently of warning and I very rarely saw a big willy contest, perhaps because most drivers realised the speeds involved meant that if they didnt put safety first then its going to get nasty.

Well that depends how fast you drive doesn't it? I tend to do 85-90mph and I pretty much guarantee that there will be some tit in a Rover doing 60mph in the next nearside lane, despite the fact that the inside lane is empty  .

Its preferable then the wasted space, as Homer points out, and huge amounts of undertaking that occurs at J24W on the M62.

Undertaking at J24? Did you get the junction number wrong? I live at J24 and can assure you no undertaking goes on there because the inside lane is always backed up half way down Ainley Brow with traffic trying to get off there  .

But you have 1 mile warning to get in lane, if there is someone doing 60mph in L3 you have a long time to decide what to do - its made quite clear how long the lane is going to last at regular intervals so is it really so difficult to decide whether there is room to overtake or whether you need to tuck in?

Only at peak times its like that..... during the day I used to get almost straight onto the roundabout.

FWIW, I've just returned from a trip that took me along the stretch in question. This morning when I went through there northbound at between 08:00 and 08:30, there were two guys in L4 just before the hatches exchanging details :yikes:

Even though there is adequate signage, the closure of L4 seems very abrupt and I suspect that they could usefully extend the "snape" of the hatches.

The other thing that I noticed was that traffic was moving a lot slower now that there are four lanes than when there were three. The merge between L3 and L4 starts almost as soon as the fourth lane appears because those who know seem not to want to be hung out to dry in L4 with nowhere to go. FWIW, this morning it was stop-start in L3 and L4 with the crawler lane moving faster than anything else.

On the whole, this has to be one of the poorest examples of traffic engineering on our motorways.

Location: Treacletown ( just north of M6 J3),A MILE OR TWO PAST BEDROCK
Has this section been worked on recently - reason - A5 DC near Magna Park has had road works recently - result - as DC ends - restriction has been brought back toward DC ,leaving more escape space , but means in practice a lot more early braking .Before drivers could see the cuttoff point ,now it is hidden by a brow and as a result ( IMHO) panic and panic braking sets in
