I think that every residential area should have speed humps, and fortunately the Government seems to think that way also.

some people who may disagree with you, for good reason.

Ah, just a bunch of NIMBYs! I bet the bloke in the story was riding his bike over ramps and obstacles in his youth, just like every other kid does/did.

Martin.. Liebchen. If so/.. I apologise. I post on basis of your past posts und since Jec posted. I think you still a bit torn then  Ist how I take the hott/cold postings. I am sure if you read - you perhaps see this? :? :? I not mean anything hostile or nasty here. Please believe me. I am not that way minded at all. I might tease. I never intend the "nasty" Nor does Mad Doc. IG would never be rude either. He far too :stop: minded

I not have much argument against speed cushion or small hump. If huge one which cause car to judder at non-registering speed on dash - then this too high und very very silly.

There also the danger of teenage "cyclist" wheely over hump .

( C+ lurks - please note the " .,... " I never suggest a seasoned, safety led commuting/Franklin led/Bikeability/Richard Peace/Neil Pedoe articled in the MAG (not daft forum of nonentities) influenced cyclist behave like that )

I hope you see point I make. I not ever intend horrid post either on here on on PH.

I would agree, IF the limits imposed WERE politically motivated and had not bearing on the requirements of the area. But surely that is dependant on your perspective.

The parish councils didn't want them; the police didn't want them (and were never consulted anyway); some people whose properties adjoined the road were in favour of local reductions, but not the blanket, draconian and confusing restrictions which were imposed.

The only people 100% in favour were the County Council. If that's not "politically-motivated" I don't know what is.

:yesyes: :rotfl: :banghead:

Kids?

They will be kids. Let's be frank Martin. Kids. They push envelopes. They try it on. They push to your limit point.

Ach. I know this. I have William (eldest .. und the sensible one )

Our terrible twins. They are nice kids. We have had our "moments" though, We hope we reigned in enough though  Especially our second son.

We have another teenage daughter. Adopted und I worry about posting this as it seem to suggest "lesser than fruit of marriage". I assure - loved as much as if I gave full birth labours to her. Our second daughter. Beautiful. Polite. But also has the odd moment just like Lukas (fruit of my womb), Andrew (adopted but as much our child as the rest) und Rachael (whose pregancy/birth reported on this board )

But children? They will push parents as much as they can.

We can only hope we teach them as best we can. We know they want to test Kismet out. They not so different to selves when we believed in youth's immortality. But we now know better. We become :yikes: our own parents in this. We can only then hope/pray that we did right thing. Made them aware of dangers.

Martin.. it not so easy when you have a wilfully stubborn teenager on you hands. You teach.. sit back HOPE it sank in. So far with ours.. so good. We then perhaps "lucky". So many are not. It not for want of trying either. Let us be honest here. It not easy to address the high spirit of youth which believe it invincible/immortal. We can only try our best on that one to be honest with you.

I hope you und Jec see this  I say again... I never intend Jec to take offence over twelve month ago. I did not post offence or did not think I did anyway to her. I felt it complacent of her to post "never speed= never having accident over 10 year period. " That all. I still sorry she took offence where none intended all the same. I hope you say so or she read this post which intended in friendship to you both.

Accidents have nasty habit of happening as someone make stupidest error if not COAST aware. :winkL: Even if COAST aware .. no guarantee any more than sitcking to lolly guarantee no prang to pristine paintwork of trusty car.

I don't see what relevance anything you wrote has to a few kids doing wheelies over speed humps on bikes or skateboards or whatever, and some miserable old bloke whinging about it?

But he see this as "anti-social" to his peace und quiet enjoyment of his "castle" perhaps. :scratcchin:

He entitled to this just as much as entitled to less motor car clattering over them humps if you like

Exactly the same way people are entitled to not have cars blaring round their communities. Given a choice between kids going over a bump on their bikes, or racing yobs/antisocial selfish drivers blazing through estates without batting an eyelid, I know which I'd choose.

But a speed cam or hump will not really stop this type. Because such may not even own that car

Most of us who actually own our cars or have a nice company car on lease to the employer have a lot more respect for keeping car in nice condition - which also include keeping its suspension in soundest order as we like it to handle und feel comfy as well  We also do not want costly repairs too. Chavvy yob in chuckaway heap then or similar who not respect car nor person would indulge in such behaviour.

The kid with the anti-social wheely stunt over the humps regardless of residents gentlly purring along to their homes: he probably grow up to be the chav who blat over the hump in his car.

But the other problem with humps? Ambulances und other emergency find them a bit difficult to negotiate if too high ...

I think you're confusing the drivers who drive with COAST to the normal pr1ck in a car, not concentrating on their driving...

Every residential area? Have you stopped to think what that means?

Speed humps are not at all 'bicycle friendly' - in fact the reverse. Just a few days ago, I wa driving down a speed humped, narrow, residential road (in fact a cul-de-sac) where a ~11 year old boy was riding his bike. I sensed that he was not focussed on his riding so, I held back. As he went over a hump, his handlebars were wrenched from his grasp, his front wheel twisted towards the middle of the road and he came off the bike, landing more or less in my path.

Fortunately for him, I has half-anticipated something untoward happening and there was no drama - not even a near miss. He picked himself up and got back on his bike, with a rueful and slightly embarrassed expression.

And exactly the same way that I am entitled to ride/drive without being in fear for my life from numpty drivers. So better quality drivers would solve both problems, I suspect. And a whole host more. Speed cams and humps cannot, and never will, educate drivers. One solution at root level should cure a lot of other symptoms, rather can just keep legislating against this and that... And that is education.

:yesyes: they're a right pain in the arse.

Bikes aside, the last thing I would want installed outside my house would be a speed hump. Far better to have the occassional nutter (presuming they even exist) whiz by than "screech, thump, thump, roar" every few seconds.

Is it an offence for a householder to remove a hump from outside their home? Reason I ask, is that a few weeks ago, someone did (in an area near me) and it's not been replaced yet?

Apparently so.

Of course what the average person wants doesn't matter as long as anti-car zealots like mpaton are in power.

Speed humps are not at all 'bicycle friendly' ...

Especially when wet! The smoother square type are particularly nasty (I have loads of them around my way). The only safe way to negotiate them (wet) is to cycle in the centre of the road.

This articlemight be of interest Botty. I'm not sure if he was prosecuted for criminal damage or not.

There might also be something on the ABD site.

My favourite humps are the ones near my London offices just off Gray's Inn Road. The side roads have a bit of a hump when you join Gray's Inn Road and the surface of the humps are cobbles! They're brilliant in the wet, just when you need to be stopping!

I ain't confusing anyone with anyone else...you cannot have one law for one particular group of drivers(your pr1cks) and another for the so-called 'safe' ones...That is why speed limits apply to all. :)
It really doesn't matter if you are safe or not, the limit when broken incurs a penalty on those who break it...it is against the law to exceed a speed limit...until there is a change in the law that is. :)

Just for the record....WE ASKED the LA to put the speed humps in they obliged after a traffic study and reduced the speed limit to suit the new conditions. We didn't have them 'foisted' onto us by some bureaucratic politically motivated moron bent on securing votes. :)

You miss my point - I'm saying that if I drive with respect to COAST, there's no reason why I should have to pay for anyone's drinks...

Who is 'WE'? I've never asked for humps in my life...
