Can you define the difference?

Yes: one is a criminal conviction and one is a civil conviction . . . . .

What would be an example of a civil conviction?

I have heard of civil penalties, but not civil convictions.

Insurance companies IMO give "Bookmakers" a bad name........

They are in the same trade of course, betting upon the odds.

Ah! but when the the "insured" wins, the insurer refuses to pay out.

You'd be better off with a Bookmaker!................

(at least, when HE loses a bet......he pays up!)

Trespass is a civil offence and thus would lead to a civil conviction

I meant to act the difference between a civil and criminal convictions tends (not always as our legal system has more exceptions than compliances :-) ) to be a criminal conviction is an action between the crown/regina and an individual. A civil conviction would be a result of a tort between two individuals.

I'm afraid I was disbused of the notion of fairness within the insurance industry some years ago when getting cover for a car having used a motorbike for a few years.

It went something like this... Did I have any no claims bonus the broker asked? Yes, I replied, 4 years on the bike. Sorry that doesn't count towards car insurance, came the reply. Then he asks have I had any accidents in the last few years? I'd been knocked off my Guzzi two years earlier and got a full pay out. So yes I said. Oh said the broker and asked for all the details. Hang on said I, if my bike no claims don't count for the car why should any accident on the bike? And grinning like a crocodile the broker replied 'That's because they make the rules', before biting of my arm and leg.

Yes it is and no it wouldn't. There is no criminal offence of simple trespass. No criminal offence; no criminal conviction.

It is not possible to have a civil conviction. It is possible to lose a civil case - but it's not a conviction

That's civil (as in civilian) as opposed to military conviction in that context
