The way I work out what speed to drive is determine the maximum safe speed in the ways you describe, then the speed limit and drive at whichever is the lower of the two as I cannot afford to lose my job through points on the licence.

The bit road I'm talking about is regularly travelled by lorries at 56mph, even on the corners, they are pathetic corners that in 90% of road conditions very few people should need to slow down for (well, at least, no need to slow down below about 40) but they do.

I could understand it if the roads had really tall hedges which the trucks can see over, but they dont, and I hope you wern't thinking that I was branding /ALL/ old people (in Rover 200s) as slow unconfident drivers. I realise that this is not the case and stated so in my last post. There are rather a lot of them about though.

As a (relatively) young person who drives a Rover 200, I take exception to that statement!

Having said that, as a die-hard Takahashi fan, I'm minded to forgive you this once.

i saw moggies bit about drops on one side - road 10 foot wide , car 4.5 ft , driver happy man. In my part of world, road at one time was about 6 ft, imagine drivers feelings.And that was in mainland britain about 35 years ago.

Lum - yep - i agree - i like to drive at or about (sometimes over ) the posted limit -i dont see why the talivans (who cant drive fast without getting nicked) should tell me that 40/50 is too fast on this road.
Trouble is our licence and livlehood depends on our licence. BUT HEY HO - send a message to HERR bliar -HE WHO SAYS "WE VILL MAKE YOU SLOW DOWN OR VALK" - raise one pen (not two fingures) and vote for some one else - when his majority gets down to about 20 the knives will come out and sense will prevail.Or we could get the tories who promise to chop em down.
Either way the idiots( talivan man etc) should start getting very nervous.

If i was employed in the scamera pratnerships i would be writing a cv ( leaving out the bit about scameras- put in something else ) and job hunting.

Sorry, I was using my head and memory before consulting the current highway code. What ! Confusion reigns.
Sense dictates that single file walking facing the prevalent traffic flow is the sensible approach. From experience it is not unknown to have to take evasive action, I would rather see and anticipate the threat.

Of course I ask the question of myself, every time. That is probably why I don't instinctively leather the gas. Could you however tell the bloke in front of a queue of traffic this afternoon that the correct order of operation is mirror, signal, then manouver if safe to do so? Having worked my way up the queue to be behind this person (30mph) I had an overtaking opportunity, at that point he braked then indicated right while I was adjacent. Tell me who was most aware of the situation.

Hmm... The rule for groups is nothing new. I was teaching this to Cub Scouts over 20 years ago.

I think the idea being that a single person is going to be easy to pass but a group is more likely to hold up traffic. If they are moving with traffic you at least have the option of following (albeit at a very slow pace). I could be wrong on this though.

i work on the railways, with great big things called trains flying by at up to 125 mph( shush, don't tell prescott, he'll bring in speed cams)
Funny thing, first thing we're taught in track safety is that the SAFEST WAY TO WALK IS FACING TRAFFIC, and if you can't do that, get at least 4 foot away from those nasty things(and always look back at least every 5 secs).

The bit about being 4 foot from cars is probably not practical on uk roads, so then the only option is to walk facing traffic.

Problem is that some drivers only respect pedestrians if in dayglo yellow and carrying a black object (looks like a camera) or a large hammer.
