i have written to so many places asking about these repeater signs. havent had a single reply. i think these repeater sign laws that arent laws fall into the catch 23 bracket. coz basically the law is

never mind the legal stuff we just want your money, and to ban you.

if you can argue that one in court you've got a defence, but you cant, so you aint got a defence.

Some authorities, such as Brighton and Hove have placed non-standard 30mph repeaters on roads such as ones that were previously 40mph. In Brighton these signs are plastic and have a black-rimmed 30 circle and are supplemented by the words "Speed limit" below this circle. As they are non-standard there is no problem with installing these repeaters, and they are very effective in reminding people who never break speed limits what the speed limit is.

Or indeed the far larger group of people who sometimes break speed limits and don't want to be caught by a camera.

In Surrey, it's also quite common to have 30mph repeaters that are permitted by virtue of not being legal speed limit signs. They're typically rectangular, with a solid black background, and bright green or orange lettering, saying "30mph speed limit zone" or something like that. I guess they'll be coming down now that they've formed a scamera partnership.......
