The sooner there's a motorway element made mandatory in new driver education and testing, the better.

The problem with this is that there are major population centres such as Norwich and Aberdeen that are a very long way from the nearest motorway, so it would be somewhat impractical.

What I would suggest is that something like the Pass Plus course is made compulsory, and includes driving on motorways or similar high-speed roads if they are present in the locality. That way, over 90% of new drivers would get formal motorway tuition, and in the overall scheme of things it wouldn't matter too much if people living in Holyhead or Thurso didn't.

I hail from the days before Pass Plus; what does it entail?

Also, I would expect that much of what you need to know on a motorway also applies on an NSL dual carriageway, and would consider that this would suffice if one were to be so unfortunate as to live in the hinterlands, far from the motorway (oh bringer of civilisation to the barbarians!).

??????? Peter - i come from an area with predominately single track roads with passing places - i used to see drivers in summertime who weren't safe on those roads at 10 MPH - why not a pass plus on single track roads for them - we used to drive at speeds that to the visitors seemed fast - yet in winter( complete with no sanding/snowploughing) we saw very few accidents. In summer we had accidents galore - mostly tourists hitting each other/HGV/sheep.Our anticipation was to see vehicles as far as possible, react in seconds and anticipate all hazards mostly up to 30 mph , and on those roads that was a good margin - i found the training on those roads invalable at 70 mph-indeed i found 70mph easy with motorway visibility after that .
