A quick rhyme for you to remember:

Stick to the limit and you’ll be OK,
until untutored child steps in your way”

…..poet and didn’t know it

Really?

Well ..

The ENTIRE Swiss family and MY OWN KIN foster children. We do this because we care about people and not for any pats on back or applause or plaudits - it's as this family just IS

I can assure you that some of these children may well have died but for our help. To date - personally have adopted sexually abused child who once feared any male and tried to take her own life .. and one child born addicted to a Class A drug. I regard both children as my own - as sired by me ... and am very, VERY proud that they call me "Papa" and I am proud of them .. admire them in my turn.

As rest of family - we foster and we have one disturbed young man with us for a long term stay and one short stay foster. The first young man was released to us because his mother could not cope and he has a rather disturbing history - which involves TWOCcing and drink and the second? His single mother is inside for a motoring offence. He admitted to us that he sees playing chicken as a challenge ..

I also posted on PH and here about the 12 year old killed playing chicken on M61 - Feb 2004 .

The 12 year old killed in Farnworth after attending a drug /drink fuelled party hosted by an addict DJ

The 15 year old who died at 11.30 pm after staggering into the path of and admittedly speeding car after consuming TWO bottles of vodka. This fact resulted in "Death By Dangerous" FAILING - yet driver admitted to speeding at TWICE the lolly limit

As a father of five .. and a foster father of many.. I confess I need to know where all children whose care rest with ME and MY WIFE and NO ONE ELSE lies.

Thus - I insist on all in this household keeping to times we impose as we run a home not an hotel.

We are also very HOT on GREEN CROSS and have a reputation of instilling this in all fostered by us as a LIFE SKILL.

That answer you?

Many a true word spoken in jest... there are some folks employed by London Underground, part of whole role is to go around with radar guns to ensure drivers are obeying speed restrictions...!

As for the humps, on some parts of the network you'd swear they were already there. :)

You're not giving us enough information here. You could be telling us:

"Incidences of children being killed by speeding drivers are very rare. Thankfully, incidences of children being murdered is even rarer"

or even:

"Parents do a good job of protecting their children against paedophiles, but get sloppy when it comes to ensuring their safety near roads"

The fact is, if a child steps out in front of a moving vehicle, 30 or 40mph isn't likely to make as much difference as the Government would have you believe. Proper, independent scientific tests need to be done, and they haven't been.

When a car manufacturer releases a new vehicle, it is subject to stringent testing by an independent body. Yet Governments can play around with road safety policy to their hearts content and make whatever claims they like, without any independent testing or regulation at all. This wrong and causes the exact sort of misunderstanding that you seem to be a victim of.

I don't know what tests you are thinking of, but this situation is played out on our roads about a quarter of a million times each year. I estimate the outcomes are as follows:

200,000 misses - the vehicle stops in time or the child steps or runs out of the way.
25,000 minor bumps with no injury and no report
12,500 bumps with minor injuries - but unreported
12,500 bumps with injuries - reported
(and within the category above:)
1,000 'serious' injuries
60 deaths.

The free travelling speed of the vehicle has little effect on the outcomes. The factors that really count are the behaviour of the child pedestrian, the attention of the driver and the attitude of the driver.

SS - and then there's the chicken situation - as played out on streets accross the land, either as an act on it's own or because the kids are playing , and with football about to come on the news ,might i suggest that as a prime cause for the next few months.
