Sorry - Pete - mis read your bit--of course accidents down to need for a fag will be erased or moved to the "too much of a hurry" column without wondering .And as a slight aside -- another driver distraction - the fag spotting "police"

Any such studies would probably yield precisely the 'desired' results - either that or they would be grossly misinterpreted.
Look what we got from the studies into using mobile phones.

Possibly the opposite - as i said - waiting to see if the scottish ban leads to more road rage/ near misses etc.

Ahhh!!

I see, drug addiction is an excuse for road rage!

Excellent!!!

They make up 15%, 20%, 50% of litter collected, depending on location etc.

Throwing things out of car windows because you are too lazy to sort them out when you get home, or because they stink the car out (hullo, smoking stinks the car out!) is just crappy and selfish.

Please don't do it.

You are no better than the MacDonalds wrapper Chavs if you do.

Roll-up dog-ends disappear in the next shower of rain. Anyway, I use my ashtray as lobbing it out of a window is asking for it to be blown back in unless you are a top-notch 'flicker'.

On the subject of 'Chav' behaviour, the Spandex/Sperm Hat brigade are not without their nasty little habits - like ejecting about a pint of gob every 100 metres or so to show what superb athletes they are.
Fag-ends etc. are unpleasant, but someone's putrefying sputum is a direct health hazard and carries a penalty under the Public Health Act...

Please don't do it :puke:

Not an excuse, I can't see "but I hadn't had a fag for 2 hours" standing up in court.

But if I was the victim, I'd be pretty annoyed to find out that the whole thing could have been avoided if said person had been able to have a fag and thus be a bit calmer.

In much the same way that: "it was the interest rate rise that tipped me over the edge" isn't much of an excuse in bankruptcy court. Yet we still know that a rise in interest rate will cause a rise in bankruptcies.

And we know that on the road many thousands of crashes are narrowly avoided each day. Add in a stress factor and it's a racing certainty that some of those near misses will turn into crashes.

It's like the last straw breaking the camel's back - you don't know which straw and you don't know which camel, but if you keep loading on straws backs are going to break.

Smoke ban to affect white van man
Scotland's so-called white van man looks set to be hit hard by next month's smoking ban.

Now , it couldn't get any dafter we thought.

Drivers coming north from England will have to stub out their cigarettes when crossing the border from 26 March.

Could the government please, just once, deal with a percieved problem by education rather than club-handed legislation.

Councils find a new to make more money--

http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/articl ... 41,00.html

Durham council says it has an agreement with the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency which will allow it to trace drivers via their numberplates

Looks likea another good reason to reject ID cards - look at the parallel options.

It's a shame camera phone pictures aren't usually admissible as evidence.

In another thread, someone in the police (apologies but I forget who) posted the amount of procedure and red tape they have to go through to make digital imagery admissible, I seriously doubt that these "butt wardens" will be intelligent enough to go through all that.

A bit of a heavy handed approach, but IMO possibly the right idea, it really does piss me off having burning bits of paper thrown at me from the car in front in case they enter through the open window and damage my interior.

At least Mythbusters have proved that you can't ignite petrol with a cigarette end, so those of you with undiagnosed fuel leaks will still be safe from this particular form of setting your car on fire.

Also, can anyone here actually say the job title "butt warden" without sniggering?

- not really - now, i'm trying to work out what sort of politically correct name they are going to get -

On the other hand -possibly another good reason to have a car invisible to the system - yesterday VED, today ,today fag wardens, tomorrow -???
Why not just stick our name and address on the windscreen and let everyone know who's car it is

Sorry to say, B cyclist, that is just the kind of hysterical statement that gives debating a bad name. There is a huge difference between dropping a fag-end and a McDonalds wrapper - and you know it.

Does it really need to be spelt out? A Maccy D wrapper is a large and nasty polystyrene thing which will visually despoil the environment for months to come.

I'm a roll-up man. The small pellet I (carefully) flick from the window is pretty much invisible when it hits the deck and will be reduced to pulp by the next tyre-smack. What's more, it is made of natural ingredients. Same with apple cores, orange peel and banana skins. I detest litter-louts but admit to chucking these out in open countryside without feeling much guilt.

And what every-rude-word-you-can-think-of business is it of the Government to tell me, a driver with almost a million safe miles on the clock, whether I can have a fag at the wheel?

What next? Prosecuting householders whose trees drop leaves?

No - read what I actually wrote again.

Then do some research. There is a huge difference between a fag end and a MacD wrapper - the fag-end will last longer.

OK B-cyclist, I've just read what you said.

Quote:

Who says? And what about untipped roll-ups?

Quote:
They make up 15%, 20%, 50% of litter collected, depending on location etc.

So nowhere is it 23.4%? Or 3.7%? Or 0%?

Not wishing to appear lazy, I rather think it's your job to present the evidence in support of your argument instead of making us look for it.

So, you smoke roll-ups and therefore all butts are biodegradable? Isn't this site worthy of better argument than that? Honestly.

As my claim about non-biodegradeability requires substantiation, so does yours to the contrary. So we have reached an impasse.

Please, provide the evidence contrary to my supposition. Then you can slag me off for my poor debating skills.

B-cyclist, you are a tiresome person. If you read what I actually wrote (to use your own expression) you will see that I only asked a few questions. I have not said anything "to the contrary" nor reached an "impasse".

What bigots like you fail to understand is that some of us have open minds and are perfectly happy to be persuaded by a solid, factually-based argument. You have not given one.

As it happens, I have Googled on biodegradable cigaratte butts and am prepared to accept that filter tips are persistent polluters. No thanks to you, though.

Sorry to speak in this tone but you really ought to develop the art of reasoned debate before posting controversial statements like this.

Please folks. I know this is a heated subject and always gets tempers frayed, but let's try to avoid ad hominems.

Yes, I'm sorry, but this kind of dogmatic sermonizing does get me wound up.

At risk of drawing more flak, he still hasn't offered a shred of evidence to support the claim that a McDonalds container will degrade quicker than a fag-end. If he can, I'm quite prepared to believe it.

Oh for goodness sake. Shame you didn't check this first before shouting off.

Astonishing.
