How do these fluctuations in voltage affect gas-discharge (HID) lamps such as those fitted as standard to my Legacy.

I have no idea how the factory fit system works, but most of the aftermarket kits I've seen have some kind of dc-dc convertor going on bringing us from 12V to 30V, so presumably there is additional regulation in place to protect the blubs, or do these things just amplify the fluctiations and make things worse?

Any decent 'dc-dc converter' will be well regulated. I'd rate it as highly unlikely that variations on the 12V circuit would have any significant effect.

And anyway discharge lamps will be far less sensitive to changes in applied voltage than filament lamps.

That's good to know. At £160 for a set of headlights, it's nice to know they will last.

What's the general consensus on LED lights here. I know there's issues with the ones that use a strobe for increased brightness (because it's usually me that complains about this) but I'm thinking more of the drop-in replacement kind that fit into standard bulb fittings. Presumably they'll never have to be replaced again for the amount of time I continue to own the car but what are they like for the poor sod that has to follow you at night?

Regulation of DC/DC convertors/invertors usually by feedback of switching voltage and usually very well regulated . Discharge lamps - is the same principle as the old "cold cathode" ,where the voltage was defined by the device.
