SS, your statement there took me back to memory lane where I spent time in the States - in most cases people there will drive to blockbusters etc when they are just around the corner. My point here is the use of cars through sheer laziness.
I don't see the use of cars as a particularly good thing as congestion will become worse. We only have so much road space. It needs to be 'intelligently' managed.
I do however rely heavily on my car, if I were to use a bus or train it would take me hours to get to work. If public transport were to improve and be more cost effective I would consider it - assuming time to work is more comparable.
It comes to having choice, and the UK is slightly restricted in that area.
