Driver 'Nicks' Police Supt
Updated: 10:02, Monday October 23, 2006
A senior police officer has been given a formal warning after being caught using a mobile phone while driving.
Chief Superintendent Guy Darby was spotted committing the offence by a member of the public who followed him back to a police station.
Leon Donohue said he saw the officer holding the phone with one hand and the wheel of his car with the other.
"I just wanted to explain I had been following him and gave him the reasons," he said.
"I wanted to make sure he knew he had done something wrong but he was blase to the point of rudeness.
"It appears he thinks he can flout the rules. If he is doing this, what are his junior officers doing?"
Mr Donohue, who trailed the officer for seven miles, said weather conditions were hazardous and he feared an accident would happen.
He made a complaint about Chief Superintendent Darby - area commander for East Surrey Police - who admitted the offence and was given a formal written warning.
The officer also made a £30 donation to charity, the equivalent of a fixed penalty fine.
He said: "If this incident highlights these dangers to anyone else, then it will be worth the embarrassment I am feeling."
