Nos and I were talking yesterday and came up with the following:

Signage in London is apparently appauling, so unless you have a map or good local knowledge then you're going to get lost.

We were wondering just how much of London's congestion is caused by either people making unnecessary journeys because they are lost and therefore possibly driving round and round until they find where they are going, or by people stopping to ask for directions.

How much of a positive impact would be made my improving signage to and along major routes, allowing easier navigation within the city and reducing unnecessary journeys?

Quite a lot I think - trying to follow the A3 from near the centre used to be almost impossible around Wandsworth as you could go 5 miles between signs. Don't forget about parking either - or rather the time spent trying to find some.

When travelling as an individual in Central London, use a motorcycle, the tube, trains or buses. There's no real place for cars there.

Whilst generally you should be using the public transport in central London there is most definately a place for cars there.

The last time I drove into central London, I had £20,000 worth of Cisco routers in the back of the car, for installation at TeleHouse. Would you carry those things onto the tube? (Assuming you could get enough people to carry them in the first place)

I don't think so.

or people trying to find somewhere to park

actually it isn't just poor signage thats a problem- it's that it works in conjuction with the number of banned right/left turns, "custom" junctions, (one-of-a-kind flight-of-fantisy creations by bored planners), and evan the number of fairly normal juntions where you HAVE to be in the correct lane, where the correct lane is frequently far from obvious until it's too late. Then you have bizarre one way systems that effectively make up a maze, enviroMENTAL areas, the list goes on and on.

you can't drive in london by looking at a map, you have to know exactly what every junction does.
