I've been looking at W.York's new "Request a Camera" page, it is quite amusing really:
http://www.safetycameraswestyorkshire.c ... camera.htm
I can't believe they are directing members of the public there, most people would think "what the heck?" and go away, or choose "don't know" for most of them.

Q. What is the approx length of the suggested camera location?
Fixed cameras may be installed on a site length between 0.4 and 1.5 km
This is a useless question - as we know the "site length" is arbitary (and usually picked to suit the statistics), and NOT the same as road length, which most people will assume they mean.
Quote:
Q. How many crashes causing death or serious injury have there been on this road length in the past 3 years?
There needs to have been at least 3 collisions causing death or serious injury per km in the previous 3 years.
...
Q Approx how many injury-causing crashes have there been at this road length in the past 3 years?
...
This information is unavailable to most people - I only know of one LA who have a public a GIS mapping system showing collisions (Herts I think). Most people have no idea of even the raw number of collisions on local roads, even the road they live on. Asking people for the number of collisions on the "road length" is just pointless (see above comment about site lengths)

Q. Have any highways improvement and/or road safety measures been carried out at this road length in the pastfew years?
Cameras may only be used on a road length where it can be proved that other highways improvement and road safety measures have been tried but have failed significantly to reduce the numbers of crashes and casualties.
Possibly the only relevant question (other than "road name/no"), since people will think about the road itself and other solutions.
In the subsequent form you are required to enter a "company/organisation" field, you can select your country (yes, I live in Afghanistan but Leeds road safety is close to my heart), and helpfully you are automatically opted-in to the SCaM newsletter (via. the mandatory email address)
