I think this is a backdoor way of avoiding the hgv 40 problem by slashing rural speed limits down to a ludicrous 40 mph. Using the mean figure also means that the 42 mph cretins are going to influence figures far more than normal safe drivers. The roads are being dumbed down at every turn to cope with the increasing incompetance of today's drivers as all they do is watch the speedo.

The mean figures on A roads are a hopeless 37 mph or some such. Changing the hgv limit to 56 mph on these roads would instantly get the average up to somewhere nearer 50.

Also it doesn't mention what distance they are going to make the measurements over. Stick the measurer by some twisty corners and instanly you have ratcheted the limit down to 40 or even lower.

I have always been someone that stuck to limits but I am beginning to think it is time to get false plates and tell them to stick their new limits where the sun doesn't shine.

Max permitted speed on A road for HGV is 50 MPH (dual carriageway), 40 mph on single carriageway, unless lower limit is signed.

Interesting point. A friend of mine had his plates cloned, and keeps getting speeding tickets and congestion charge fines for places he's never been. He phoned the police and they basically said "sorry, loads of people are doing it, we haven't got the time to bother with it. Get yourself a new plate".

That statement does make me wonder why I'm still bothering to use a genuine plate, since they don't seem to be interested if you use a false one.
