They have clearly missed the really obvious way of getting round it. Declare SORN on your unregistered car then the police have to catch you driving it on the road. Just like they do now.

How are they going to know if you have sold a car and the dvla haven't got round to updating the registered keeper's details? You could get an FPN for not insuring a car you no longer have possession of. Guilty until proven innocent yet again...

Whatever i do with my vehicles, i take photo copies & send it to the DVLA, registered post.

I have 2 vehicles that i only use for the summer, which i completed SORN for both, put them in the same envelope and sent them to the DVLA.

Woe & Behold, i got a £40 fine on one of my vehicles for not completing a SORN, which the DVLA have no record of receiving. Which i duly paid to avoid the fine from rising. HAve requested it back, when they check & correct their records, will not hold my breath :!:

2 weeks ago, i received a fine for not taxing one of my trucks, so i duly photocopied the tax disc which is in date and sent it back, still waiting for a reply for that one.

My advice is, make sure you photo copy everything you send them, and keep the records for the time you own the vehicle.

Yes, absolutely. The DVLA is in a real mess. One recent estimate said that 25% of all their records were wrong in some material way.

We've experienced 2 "lost" SORN declaration in the last 12 months. Both sorted out. Both loads of hassle.

EVERYONE: ALWAYS make copies and ALWAYS send by registered post

I always do SORNs and tax disks at a post office. That way you get a receipt so the dvla can't argue with you.... luckily I have a post office within 5 minutes walk :)

Are the dvla subject to the same dpa regulations in that you can't have incorrect or outdated information about a person? If so the dvla could be in deep do-dos.

Did my tax disc at the post office, it turns out they failed to notify the DVLA and the disc they supplied was a month old.

Waiting in anticipation for a new Correct disc.
