Maidenhead Advertiser Article

Another one bites the dust! Like most of the others, it would seem to be ill founded. I believe someone was injured crossing the road, so of course the knee jerk reaction is to blame the motorist, and in particular, the motorists' speed. I wonder when Britain will escape from the Blair era rut that it's in, and begin to realise that it's wrong to believe that the panacea against all ills is more and more laws. Every day I see pedestrians who don't look when they cross the road. Just yesterday I had a family step off the kerb and cross in front of me, without looking and having disregarded the red man pedestrian signal, as I was only about 10 yards away on my bike.

Here's a quote from the article -
Quote:
“We’re absolutely thrilled. We’ve done our own checks, and the average speed for the road is 47mph. People who live on the Bath Road say they see people on motorcycles and in cars going too fast all the time.”

What is "too fast"? The limit is currently 50, and the average speed for the road is only 47, according to the person I quoted.

Enough from me - here's a google earth picture of the road, running more or less east-west. Travelling east in this picture, the big intersection you come to is Maidenhead Thicket - junction 9B on the A404M where it crosses the A4.

The only reason anyone might have to cross the road is that there's sometimes a mobile kebab stand in one of the lay-bys, and some drivers stop in the opposite lay-by and then cross to the van on foot.

Reaction to the change on the Maidenhead Advertiser's public forum/bulletin board has been negative. I am in the process of joining the forum. Perhaps I'll invite people there to join Safe Speed!

Just in case the news item disappears from the newspaper's website. I have saved it in an .MHT file. You can get it here. The file opens with IE, but may not open properly in all web browsers.
