I've been doing a little research triggered by the latest focus on Rural Casualty statistics and have noted that councils still seem to be obsessed with speed reduction.

For example: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/tpm/tal ... dlaneessex

Table 1 shows a very slight reduction in speed. But the layout of the road means that the required stopping distance is almost doubled in places. So the net effect of this treatment is a massive increase in accident risk.

we also see "Over half of all drivers questioned thought driving
along Bird Lane was more difficult than before, with a
few drivers reporting damage to tyres caused by hitting
the kerbs and others mentioning poor or aggressive
driver behaviour".

Conclusion.

Road more difficult to drive, slight reduction is speed = increased overall danger.

thoughts.

you can see some more insane Rural traffic calming schemes here:

I think this is surely a topic for discussion on safespeed. As it shows that obsession with absolute speed reduction can increase danger. Similar to the camera story?

Add in the dark nights, rain, fog it's all becomes a recipe for disaster. The thing I can’t get my head around is we all let them get away with it.

Those are really urban schemes - there are some rural examples towards the bottom of this page:

Rural Traffic Calming...What a laugh that is.

I live now on the Isle of Wight.
The home of Rural Traffic Calming.

This calms nothing..especially drivers who become rightly agitated over these DANGEROUS practises.

Dangerous..allow me to explain.

Windy road,,,speed limit 40 to 60mph.
You see the sign warning you of traffic calming..(a chicane basically)
So,,you check your speed,,reduce you speed in anticipation of the restriction.
Then as you turn a corner,,,there is the sign,,under foliage. Sometimes the entire sign is obscured by hanging brambles.
You then furrow your brow,,think,,thats stupid,,,and try to see what the message is and figure out what is what,,,all taking precious time.
TOOOOOOOOO LATE,,,your on top of the chicane being forced into a head on crash.

Speed bumps that cause poor drivers to move towards the centre of the road.
People have little idea what speed bumps every day costs them in fuel,,brakes and suspension parts.

The real LOONY TUNE is the zebra crossing on the forest road.
This is a zig zag and chicane,,,with small islands,,lamp posts...and in the middle,,,A ZEBRA CROSSING FOR A SCHOOL!!!
Look at the kerbs on the islands and they have all been hit.
The road,,,is the MAJOR road from Neweport to Yarmouth,,(where all SW mainland traffic comes from).

Then the calming nonsense.
By making drivers stop/start..slow..speed,,slow..speed..endlesslly. It causes massive frustration.
So now we have anxious to angry people on the roads.

DIXIE..YOUR RIGHT,,,why do we allow these morans to affect our lives in such a negative way???

IMHO, almost all modern congestion is caused by 'traffic calming' - a problem that this bunch of pirates want to tax us further for.

I would like to propose that on Tuesday the 1st of April 2008, everybody uses public transport to get to and from work. No cars or bikes - let us show the nation what a piss-poor alternative is offered to private transport.
