Apologies if mentioned before, but are we aware of this edition of 'The Investigation' on Radio 4 on Thursday 19 April at 8pm?

Simon Cox investigates the truth about speed cameras and transport policy. Before speed cameras were introduced the number of road deaths was falling dramatically, but this is no longer the case.

Why has this big downward trend stopped? In 2005 there were over 2 million successful speeding prosecutions. Is punishing so many drivers really making our roads safer or are speed cameras causing as many problems as they solve?

I heard the presenter of this programme on the radio this morning. The main thrust of his argument seemed to be that the reason speed cameras are ineffective is that about 50% of people flashed do not receive any penalty. The reasons being administrative problems (DVLA errors) or deliberate avoidance schemes by drivers.

Let's hope that my impression of the rationale behind this programme is mistaken.

Gawd. I hope not. What an absurd theory!

I've been working on this programme for a couple of months, talking to them frequently. I gave them a long interview in London on Monday this week.

But recently they have become a little 'secretive'. I put it down to 'politics' (either around the office or some wider issue). I hope they weren't hiding this ridiculous 'grand theory'.

Yes, the beeb to be having a goverment bias recently.

One of the fellas off MART (Manchester Against Road Tolls) had an interview with BBC on Monday.

he said that the reporter and his cameraman seemed dispointed with the 3 councils pulling out of the idea.

Anyhoo, with a few months prep it should hopefully be a fair chance to represent our point of view over the failure of speed cameras.

Listening to this story .. it is alarming.

They are sinking to desperate means by indoctrinating young kids (the sunflower seed silliness!)

Then there was the story of the 4 kids in a defective.. this gave the "KSI" to justify a scam. (Kev Delaney- RAC) Not suprisingly this skews the "efficiency claim"

Linda Mountain was quoted. She was quoted in person and vindicates Klaril's replies to the internet troll on EDP  Her main finding was buried in the appendix.

What I have heard so far appears to support our campaign and argument.

SO far .. very damning  But am listening as I type here. Wildy is listening very closely in her study and recording this as well.

Did you see how the SCP skipped the RTTM question?

Quote:
Don’t leave it to chance

Is that really the best response they could come up with?

And they couldn't even bring themselves to say that in person

Absolutely pathetic

I would have liked to see a word regarding other engineering/safety measures applied at camera sites. Other than that it hit the more significant right notes. Good job Paul.

Manslaughter for allowing the 'Deaths preventable through good policing'
:yesyes: People must be held to account, not necessarily for giving us this poor policy, but continuing with it even when organisations such as this have been broadcasting these flaws.

Perhaps it is time to change the :ss: clock!

I'll have to listen again, but I think Linda Mountain misquoted her own figures. That's dodgy.

But...

RTTM. <check>
Side Effects <slight check>
Dodgy serious injury stats <check>
Deaths and hospitalisations not falling as expected <check>

We're definitely getting there.

I will have to listen again.. but I would say on superfical l aggregate listening that the programme was more supportive than anything broadcast in the past to the argument against these scams

Definately and if the SCP' are relying on the "we must not leave it to chance" or "just one life saved is worth it" statements, speaks volumes about their effectiveness as 'organisations'.
