Video 2:
- Do not over-react when faced with animal jumping out into your path - did you see the way the driver turned the steering wheel?
I was a passenger when we had a chicken (or a similar animal) hop out right in front of us a few months ago (the driver wasn’t overtaking) – he just ran over it; not nice I know but better than panic braking – especially as another vehicle was close behind us.
- It’s not a good idea to perform an overtake when approaching a junction (a point which becomes relevant below).
- We didn’t see how fast overtaker was going, let alone if he was illegal – so exactly why was he in the dock? The point made in the video is valid “Driving too fast to cope with the unexpected.” but I’m not sure it applied in that case.
Would the manoeuvre have been deemed to be dangerous/risky had the dog not ran out or driver the driver not over-reacted? (and there was no junction)
- And to show just how contrived that situation was, didn’t he notice how close the oncoming car was? The driver should have known from the outset that there was no chance of completing that manoeuvre safely!

Now I think about it, the extremely poor overtake would have been a far better basis for an advert like that (I bet it would have been more beneficial too).

At least he indicated!

Video 1:
Slow or fast - you die
There was a 'slow' procession there too - "enjoy your hesistation... to the end"

There was a higher-res version of Video 2 at YouTube, but i guess that commercial interests are more important than saving lives

Anyway, here are a couple more suggested titles...
  • Keep your dog on a lead
  • Don't snog your boyfriend on a stone bridge beside a national speed limit road
  • Be aware that riding a horse in a field can startle dogs
  • ...
Road safety education is very important, but biased propaganda in not the way to do it :(

UAMK Road Safety Council are from the Czech Republic.

I dont see anything wrong with either commercial if they were part of a wider campaign to promote better driving. 8-)
From the number of google results the first one has a worldwide appeal which is good - it grabs attention then delivers a message. It needs to be put into context.

If you pause the video with 15 seconds remaining you can see that it was actually a good location for an overtake, especially if the red car was driving slowly. Good visibility on a straight, a corner at the end but with a good bit of grunt that wouldn't be a problem. Which brings me to the point...where did the blue car come from that crashes into the red one. It's nowhere to be seen when the overtake starts and yet a second after the silver car flips it's crashing into the red one. Or does it come from another junction that I can't see due to the low-res? It doesn't come out of the one by the wall. In which case the silver car shouldn't have been overtaking, but nor should the blue one have come out of the junction if it had seen not one but 2 cars heading towards it along the straight.

It's a frustrating ad in many ways in that it is claiming speed kills, whilst in reality that overtake (bar the junction) is one which I know I have done many times when following doddery folk on rural roads. Perfectly safely, I may add. The same result could have come from 2 drivers traveling within the limit, going in opposite directions, with one car swerving in front of the other to avoid the dog.

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone recall the ad from a few months back with the motorbike rider who gets messages about hazards written on the back of vans and walls etc...? One of which was "I'm turning right, mate" or similar on a white van. The advert closed with "You don't get warnings like this in the real world" as he safely returns home. Whilst some were good examples, to be fair you SHOULD get a warning when vehicles turn. They're called indicators. Now if we could just teach people how to use them again...

It was called 'Perfect Day' and I've got it on a DVD I got free from somewhere - maybe the police BikeSafe day? It finishes as he parks up outside his garage after avoiding all the hazards and a bird overhead craps down his leathers. :)

Agree about the indicators though...

I was expecting Dave Allen to appear at any moment in the first one.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I was accelerating after turning into an NSL straight road, hence the name of Seven Mile Lane, which has bushes and low trees along both sides. Just as I checked my mirror a duck flew over a hedge and landed right in front of me. I didn't have time to brake because I was so surprised. It was like you're at a theatre and someone throws a duck on from the wings. I went straight over the top of it.

Checked the mirror and saw it shake itself and fly off again.

Amazing, the resilience of some animals.

In the late 1950s I was driving on the country lane from Horsham to Rusper.

A cock pheasant erupted from the left-hand hedge a few yards in front of me, BANG! - I went straight over him, and in my mirror saw him roll, flutter, then lie still.

I wondered - who does he belong to? Me or the land-owner? Will I be prosecuted if I take him home, hang him and eat him? (The concept of road-kill hadn't then crossed the Atlantic).

A small van pulled up behind me. The driver, obviously an old hand, weighed up the situation, grabbed the bird and was gone.

We had shepherds' pie that evening.
