Hey. Today I think I might have been caught by a mobile speed camera but I'm not sure :s

I was on the A47 (60mph stretch), getting tailgated by someone as normally happens. I'm not making any excuses, but I sped up and was probably doing 75-80. As I say, not excuses but the car in front was pulling away from me even at that speed.

As I looked right, I saw a normal police car, parked on the other side of the road and perfectly hidden by a bush. Nothing flashed for me, the car in front or the car behind. About 100 metres (maximum) up the road there was another standard police car, again parked behind another bush. I had reduced my speed for that one, so it shouldn't be a problem.

In both cases, the officers were sitting in their cars, and they were almost hidden. Is it likely that they were there for some other purpose, as they weren't the safety camera cars, just normal ones. Neither of the officers wore flourescent jackets either. Could one have been patrolling one side of the road and the other patrolled the other side of the road? I've never seen a mobile patrol on that road and to see two next to each other is strange.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks :)

I think what you describe is a very rare event. This would be the lesser spotted traffic cops enforcing road law.

Anyway, to end the irony, it sounds like you passed through a police traffic patrol. As far as I am aware, car no. 1 monitors the traffic for drivers who are 'misbehaving' when he spots one he radios ahead to car no. 2 who gets rolling in anticipation of catching the miscreant. The offender can then expect to be pulled over and punishment will range from a stern lecture from the officer to fining. Since you were not stopped, your driving probably was 'not of interest' to them.

I suspect that the speed in question would have been "of interest" to a scamera though :banghead:

By posting this message, worried one, you have been a safe driver having neither caused an accident nor been involved in one

Thanks for the replies, both of you :)

Odin > car #2 was in no position to follow anyone on my side of the road, since he was on the other side of the road. Maybe they were patrolling the other side of the road?

Sigma > Yeah - no excuses for the speed, but I was driving perfectly safely. I wasn't swerving around, or tailgating the guy in front. Only thing wrong was the speed (although I would contest that it wasn't dangerous).

Can they legally catch you and send a NIP if they're sitting in their cars at the time? I thought they had to be standing with a yellow jacket on?

Thanks!
