On the M6 yesterday evening, and a few times on the same journey recently, I've started to notice some speed limit roundels appearing, covered in a green gauze. They look like permanent signs, not temporary limit signs, as they are attached to solid posts.

Yesterday I was able to see that at least a couple of them are :60: signs (where the gauze was partially blown away, on one there was only a single piece so it was partially see through).

This was on the M6 in both directions, from Lancaster (Forton) services for about 5 to 7 miles north (may have been further up as well).

Anyone know what's going on? I've done a few Google searches but found nothing I can attribute it to?

It's probably/possibly them ramping up the gradual screwing down of speed limits and the ramping up of nanny state. Or, the chancellor suspects he may lose a lot of income if loads of people quit smoking so needs to be able to generate a nice steady stream of income. I can't think of a better place than a major motorway! Kerching.

I wouldn't be surprised :(

then why not do a silent protest as I do by running in third gear instead of fifth and with my 2.5 litre guzzler wow it certainly chucks the emissions out in that gear lol

Hi there (new person, some of you on here may know me).

Not sure what these repeaters are about - as far as I know there are only two of them in total, one on each carriageway about 1 mile south of Forton Services - one is on the River Wyre sign near the service area northbound.

My only logical guess is these are a hangover from roadworks that passed a long time ago and have never been removed.

As far as I know there is no plan to reduce the speed limit on any section of the M6.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi Bryn! You don't know me but yes, I know you (from here if anyone was wondering; what this guy says about roads tends to be on the correct side....)

Thanks :)

Oh, quick correction to the original post. The signs in question are in fact :50: .

Be worried if this is a permanent reduction, but as said, I really can't see it myself. There'd be zero compliance - indeed, in my experience average travel speeds on the M6 there are well into the mid 80s.

Hi Byrn666 :welcome: Hope you haven't got those numbers tatooed on the back of your neck :)

Only today, on the radio, I heard someone arguing about the dangers of speed and governments putting pressure on manufaturers to limit vehicles to a maximum speed of 100mph. :(

Then some lovely person pointed out that in Germany they have open speed limits on their D-rstricted Autobahns which have a far better accident record. :)

So if anyone tells you it's because speed is dangerous - white man speak with forked tounge.

As for slower means more economy? Well that may be a good argument but where do you draw the line? 45mph maximum perhaps? Different vehicles have the best economy at different speeds so, just like the dumb speed kills argument, it isn't that simple.

I had a motorbike which would return 90 mpg at 70mph so maybe a graduated speed inforcement according to what vehicle you use?

What a silly world we live in these days. I think I'm going to start wearing a clowns outfit to fit in with the rest of the jokers in uniform

Hello Bryn

Agreed, compliance would be terrible. That section of motorway is no different to most other sections that have a 70mph limit, and so anything slower would be completely pointless.

Aren't there still some secondary check lines on the carriageway there too?
The camera WAS behind the bridge pillar for the Forton Services.... but it went when the contraflow did.
However, some motorists still brake when they see them!!

Were this lower down the motorway ( J3-7), i'd say it was the target mid morning, OR j10 -7 mid/late afternoon

Arguably that section is different, but different in my experience in that there is usually less traffic than the M6 further south, the M1, the M40 to name but three.

Indeed. My girlfriend's car returns much better fuel economy at 80mph than at 70mph. This is because the torque converter in the automatic gearbox doesn't lock until you're doing 75. Therefore the speed limit should be raised for her in order to save the planet.

Hi

I think I passed those services on Sunday and there where the white measurement lines on carriageway. On looking back all the windows accross the footbridge were blacked out except the middle ones, so do they scam from them perhaps? No reason for them to be the only clear windows really.
