isn't having to declare SORN not the same as having to prove you are Innocent, something that goes against the grain of English Law?

it's just the same as having to prove you are who you say you are, again Contrary to established Law

What else would you suggest? (short of abolishing vehicle excise duty)

not sure, and do realise they have to get the Tax dodgers, it's just that SORN in my view contravenes English law

Unless we rely solely on ANPR crews to catch the dodgers? Well at least the MOT and insurance (database allowing !) dodgers could be caught too!

As far as I can see, your LEGAL declaration of SORN for the coming 12 months as the holder of that vehicle absolves you of any taxation provided that you do not use the vehicle on a public road without notifying them within a 12 month period.

THEN IT'S UP TO THE AUTHORITIES TO REMIND YOU.........JUST LIKE THEY DO WHEN YOUR ROAD TAX IS DUE!....

IF they DON'T, then their clever MULTI-MILLION pound system needs a refit!

AS far as I'm concerned, it's up the them to keep their system up to date......not me!

If I haven't driven the vehicle after 12 months and have declared SORN, then THEY must prove GUILT and prove that I have!............ or, either, remind me, or shut the F.... up!

I agree (for once  with j prescot). I should not commit an offence for leaving my parked car on my drive and forgetting the paperwork. I haven't evaded tax, or hurt or disadvantaged anyone.

If I know that I am taking my tr4's off the road for more than 1 year I should be able to declare them sorn for longer.

The government should prove tax evasion before prosicuting.

We've had lots of debate about SORN but what about this.

What if,

you were to write a statement, sworn under oath, that you are notifying that your vehicle is off the road and will be so until further notice?

How could they then fine you for not 're-declaring'?

Given the choice between going to court at an appointed time (for the oath), or going to the DVLA website and clicking 'SORN your vehicle' - I would choose the latter, even if I had to repeat it every year.
However, that doesn't mean both systems couldn’t be put in place.

That could be extended in other/all areas: drivers could swear under oath that they wouldn't exceed the speed limit when driving - would you advocate that? Would it work? If not what’s the difference?

I'm pushing the boundaries!!!

A commisioner for oaths would do.

I like 'what ifs'

Unfortunately, as many have found, if DVLA don't bother to remind you to renew the SORN then its your fault and your fine to pay.

Unless, of course, it is on the road as an exempt vehicle.
