Just thought I'd post this and see what people think.

I got a new car back in june and got the insurance switched over before i drove away from the showroom. They sent me out the new documents the next day. I looked at them and in the 'fine print' they say any vehicle owned by me. Now my car isn't actually owned by me, my mum is the registered keeper. I rang up to get this changed, and they sent me out another certificate, again with this wording any vehicle owned by me. At this point I left it because my policy was up for renewal and I thought maybe when the new policy started it would sort this problem out. Skipping forward a few weeks I get my new certificate and everything, again with the wrong wording for my circumstances. To be honest I can't really be bothered ringing again. The policy is for the correct vehicle, registration and everything is fine, engine size, model, etc. is all right, just this one sentence.

In the schedule for the policy it does mention that the car can be owned by the policy holder, spouse or parent, so do you think that would be enough or should I ring up again and get them to change this?

Input greatly appreciated :)

As the DVLA (and presumably the N.I. equivalent) points outs though, the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. Did you pay for the car yourself? That makes you the legal owner regardless of what the registration says.

I've often thought it odd in the U.K. that despite insurance legalities resting upon whether one actually owns the vehicle or not there is no official record anywhere of ownership. If you have a bill of sale that proves that you bought the car on the date shown, of course, but you could have sold it to somebody else since.

When I was little younger I was trying to insure a car that was registered to my dad. The insurers told me that I couldn't do it as I wasn't the owner of record, and thus had no financial interest to insure, so I don't know whether they assume ownership for privately owned vehicles.

It rather sounds like your insurance policy is a comprehensive one ,of some description, which covers you for other vehicles, although in my experience they normally say "any vehicle not owned by you, with the owner's permission, yadda yadda". I would say that as long as the correct vehicle registration number and your name appear on the certificate of insurance, there should be no issue.

You might want to send them a recorded delivery letter re-stating your point. get the recorded delivery slip before hand and photo copy the letter, the slip and the envelope on an A3 copy before sending it in the post.

If you ever had to make a claim this might be very useful if they tried to worm out.

I have that bit too, this is just under the description of the vehicle. It says any one vehicle owned by the policy holder, leased to the policy holder under a lease agreement, or hired to the policy holder through a hire purchase agreement.

It is likely your insurance will apply only to a specified vehicle, not "any vehicle owned by the policyholder". What does this text in the policy say, exactly and in full.
