There are currently roadworks while the bridge carrying the main line of the M56 over the Sharston Spur at Junction 3 is repaired. These have a 40 mph limit on the spur, presumably because of narrow lanes offset to one side. Normally it's NSL.

However, as you come off the main line, the 30 mph limit drop is signed by just a normal pair of 40 mph red roundel signs, with no advance warning, and within a hundred yards of this is a not very obvious Monitron camera.

Obviously you'll know about it the second time, but it could easily catch out the unwary. How long before there is a serious tail-end shunt here when someone spots the camera and slams the anchors on?

This really is a classic "revenue-raiser" installation :x

I must admit to being surprised by these the first time.

I was just coming to the end of my routine drive and have to admit to being partly on autopilot, looking out for usual hazards but not a sudden sharp reduction in speed limit.

I had clocked the change in limit and eased of the gas, gently applied the brake - no sudden manouvres. However I then notice the lines across the centre of the road for the speed camera and braked to 40 mph dead just as my car met level with them.

Here's hoping I don't get an NIP, but if I do I guess fair cop. Should have been paying more attention.

fair ? really ? you think you should have been paying more attention to sudden speed limit reductions and cameras which make you brake suddenly to avoid a fine, regardless of the risk it places for rear end collisions, instead of carrying on driving looking out for the usual hazards instead?

If nothing else with this installation there should be advance signs saying ":40: 300 yards" or similar.

You don't expect a sudden :nsl: to :40: reduction on a motorway in a location where, because of the curvature of the slip road, you can't see it well in advance.

Ive gotta say this is the first time ive been on the M56 in nearly a year and was surprised at the 2 speed cameras.

I think i was doing 50 when i went through the first camera, with a load of signs telling me i needed to move lane, 2 big lorries in the lane next to me and a car tailing me i was too busy making sure i didnt crash to take care of my speed. Obviously i took my foot off the accelerator when i seen the 40 signs yet when i seen the speed camera lines about 100 yards later i was near enough on top of them, with a car behind me 2 lorries to the side of me and icy weather i couldnt risk slamming my brakes on as i had done about 15 mins before and skidded on some ice. I hope i dont get a fine and points for this as its an outrage. Its not the fine im worried about its more the points as it will make my insurance go up quite alot next year.

Note that the road signs were wrong and i didnt have to change lanes. It said to the left lane to use the hard shoulder, which they didnt need to use as my right lane was not blocked and the whole patch of motorway was the same as it used to be bar a few cones at the side of the road.
