Sorry, don't see the issue here. The villagers have a, recently posterior-dwelling, figure for how many people they think were speeding. Fact is, they want a by-pass. Its tragic NIMBYism.

Sucks that they should have to endure it, but begs the question, would they not have paid more for their houses were they not backing onto a busy main road?

Many facets to this story as its just a cameo of the sort of thing happening in small towns and villages across the land.

Point 1 - We all want cars, we all need cars, we all use cars and we all drive through other people's neighbourhoods. Do the dwellers of this village who are complaining about the speed of traffic through their environs observe the speed limit through other peoples'? Two 'wrongs' don't make a right, but its all about perception of the car as a driver and as an external observer.

Point 2 - Without the visual cues of the smiley sid sign and the police officer I wonder how many of the residents could tell the difference between the regular speed of the traffic and the suppressed speed with the officer present. I wonder what the real difference is?

Point 3 - If the smiley sid sign were set to flash at, say, 20 mph but the traffic was actually doing 30 mph I wonder how many would perceive it was travelling at 40 mph?

Point 4-all the energy saved by all the villages on that route by recycling would be completely negated by 5 lorries having to divert round there if they reclassified it.

Incidentally, I wonder if the council realise that if they reclassify the road so HGVs can't use it the average speed will RISE...

That's what the government want you to believe of me. If they get back in I'm emigrating.

You can often tell on a long rural journey when the car in front is about to turn off into their road, because as they get close to home they start driving at exactly or just below the speed limit, even if they'd not done so through previous villages....

It's like people who protest about mobile phone masts. I got a letter in a local rag regarding one such protest saying "If you don't want phone masts, cancel your mobile phone contract in protest". No reply.

They have said that 36000 vehicles exceeded the limit in this village in one week where are our "scammers" what a killing (metaphorically speaking) they would make @ £60.00 a go

But seriously obviously if it is so dangerous to exceed the limit in this village why aren,t they using the "specs" cameras as a deterrent as they would be used for recording speed for the entire length of the road not just as "Gatsos" do a 75 yard stretch :?: :?: :?:

As NosR2 says if you build a bypass you take out the HGV,s using this road but is it the HGV,s who are exceeding the limit I think not as I don,t think that 36000 HGV,s use this road in a week so it is simply the majority of cars exceeding the limit and just as an aside how did they collate these figures :?: :?: :?:

A couple of points here. I don't know the exact circumstances of this sign, but the two I pass fairly regularly are both positioned just inside a 30 zone, which you go into from a derestricted or 50 zone. If this is the case here, cars slowing down without sudden braking to the 30 limit could easily get the sign to flash as they might still be marginally over the limit. I also imagine that the sign is configured with no 10% margin so will pick up more cars than a speed camera.

As for the effect of the police officer - well obviously cars will be slower. People will slow down to 25 or so "just to be on the safe side".
