I've just read this too.

What happens if you say politely to the child after they have finished berating you "I have listened to what you have to say but you are ill informed and too immature to make a reasoned judgement about something as complex as road safety."

Do you get the £60 and 3 points? Is fake contrition what is required?

Anyway, what if i'm a paedophile ...

Haha, oh the shame they would face from being "grilled" by a child. This is an amazing point!

Trying to educate drivers not to speed inappropriately instead of handing out a ticket must be a good idea, no?

While I am not sure about using children to do this perhaps for some drivers it would help the message go home.

The problem I think would be the message not the method of delivery, if the old 30mph 80% survive rubbish is being pedalled out then I am against. If the kids are telling the drivers that they must be aware of their surroundings and the potential hazards that may occur near a school then it could be far more effective than a fine.

The ones caught speeding near a school are the ones unlikely to benefit from being lectured.
I doubt that drivers speeding in a high risk area would be given that chance anyway.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Why? I was thinking of a basic COAST principles. Are you saying they are irredeemable and that cameras and points are the way to go?

Is not the point of the article that they are being given that chance?

Why don't they make the kids lie down in the road to act as speed bumps?

I'm still mad at being caught on camera the other day :)

Its happening here too http://www.rossendalefreepress.co.uk/news/s/1037757_primary_pupils_to_help_stop_speeders

Whilst there can be no good reason for any driver to drive at an excessive speed anywhere, but especially near a school, I have major reservations about such schemes.

In this instance they appear to be using a version of a SID to check the speeds. Since they are not intending to prosecute but only to give a warning does the equipment have to be calibrated? Is it possible that inaccuracies will mean that they will pull drivers who are driving legally?

Are we giving children the wrong message in many instances? If we teach them at this young age that it is OK to tell adults off are we not breeding a generation of yobs in their teens? Should we not be teaching them that their road safety starts with them; if they are not in the road it does not matter what speed a car is doing?

I am all in favour of the police checking speeds and the standard of driving outside schools (or wherever deemed necessary) but any telling off should come from the police themselves. Of course the police can always take legal action if they deem it necessary.

I would be interested in any comments from our BiB posters.

Regards

Malc

It not new./ It a gimmick  They do this all over the place now.

My own villains? They more likely to tell the driver about COAST .. but when this touted by their teacher .. am delighted to say that we got "summoned" because Lukas was a bit "rude".

He simply said he did not respect hedgehogs which he see regularly as "road kill" as means of teaching him.. .. but did rather like the Green Cross Code idea. - especially Darth Vader .. Und he told his teacher that he would like Luke Sky walker.. Doctor Who or his assistant.. to help teach him cross a road as they have longer life expectancy than a hedgehog

Oh dear.. his teacher think we right weird ones  She find Lukas a bit of a "challenge" anyway :boxedin: I claim no responsibilty here.. this child ist like his Papa.

Generally, I wouldn't send a child to do an adult's job.

1st of all, whether this is understood consciously or not, punishment primarily satisfies the punishers, in and of itself. Punishing an adult by forcing that adult to heed a lecture from a child may satisfy the child's ego, and it may satisfy the ego of those who empower the child, but that simply guarantees that any remedial effect will be incidental, and will have nothing to do with the punishment itself, or any humiliatory aspects of that punishment.
It would depend on the quality of the monologue the child is reading, which may very well have the same benefit outside of a purile punishment scenario, for both the victim and the reader, assuming the reader can understand what he is reading.

2nd, anyone who is averse to humiliation will be far more likely to contribute to the growing disdain for the police and the state than to gain a remedial effect. This might actually cancel any possible remedial effect if the punishment is in anyway perceived as an abuse of power for its own sake.

3rd, there is a disturbing trend to elect the underage to do the work of adults, with far reaching consequences that defy examination, as well as understanding. Are these children paid for their time and effort? What do they understand about what they are going to say and/or do? What, if anything, do they learn from doing it? Are any of these lessons accurate or good for the kid, for the adult he/she will become?
We already know that the present so-called 'road safety culture' is suspect of not having actual road safety as its primary function. These children will learn things from that culture, the experience they are being asked to participate in sans compensation, and the quality of the monologue they are reading.

I have always encouraged my nephews and my niece to question what is being said, without challenging who said it whenever safely possible, and also to consider how they would feel if they were in a position where either what they said was being questioned, or they were being challenged. Since most children are actively taught not to detect the difference, we may in fact be breeding a generation of teenage yobs.

What's a yob?

The so-called person who came up with this 'innovative' safety measure no doubt is pleased with himself, and probably finds his ego justified each time someone chooses to be lectured by a ten-year old who couldn't possibly be expected to comprehend or intelligently argue the position he is reading, probably without being paid, on some coward or lazy bum's behalf.

Who was that other guy that used to recruit children into his propaganda war? My mind's gone blank. I think his first name was Adolf or something like that...
