Questions:-
1, Are motorway matrix signs mandatory or are they a suggested safe speed?

2, Temporary traffic signals, is it true as I am led to beleive that you can go through a red temp traffic light providing you can see that the way ahead is clear?
I would be happy if someone can clear up these issues for me Thanks.

With motorway matrix signs the easiest thing to look for is any red light. If there's a red light it's mandatory, if there isn't it's not. I can't think of any exceptions to that off-hand.
A red X and/or red 'bouncing balls' are mandatory, as are red-ringed (with white numbers) speed restriction signs.

It is possible to drive through a set of temporary traffic lights on red if there's nothing coming, but it's just as illegal as doing it anywhere else.

<pedant>

The red signals on matrix signals are side to side wig wags

</pedant> :D

And even though the lights seem to be stuck on red, they might have been switched to all red to allow a works vehicle in or our, or for a bit of plant to encroach on the carriageway. Though probably doesn't apply at 3 in the morning (or during tea break :) ) though

Or there may be a signalised third and/or fourth arm that you cannot see. Plant hire companys are notorious for supplying temp signals with defective vehicle detectors - as are some contractors notorious for leaving the signals on fixed time, despite explicit instructions from the highway authority. Mind you, I have only ever had to suspend one contractor from site for that.

And no, flashing your lights at them doesnt make them change quicker for you either.

Not really that, I just find enjoyment in reading all the self important pontificating of the majority of users on this site.. and of course putting across the professionals (i.e one who does this kind of job for a living and not from an armchair) point of view.
