Hi all,

Today, I spotted an Avon and Somerset mobile scamera targetting traffic travelling westbound on the A303 about here.

However there were no camera warning signs at all. Are camera vans allowed to operate without any warning signs?

I think so, they just (allegedly) can't net off the fines. The handbook is not a rule book, just a set of guidelines. As long as the equipment is HO approved and operated correctly, the limit is enforceable at any speed above it from anywhere, without any warning.

This is the signage rule the SCPs must adhere to if they want to net off:

DfT Handbook of rules wrote:
Rule 3: Signing rules

For fixed speed camera and red-light camera sites, the first camera warning sign must be placed not more than 1 km from the first camera housing in the direction being enforced.

For mobile sites, camera warning signs must be placed in advance of the point of entry to the site or route (including or excluding minor roads at the discretion of the partnership) in the direction being enforced.

Interesting.

But it really does make you wonder if they're after even more cash.

JC: Oh… errr [/url]

Such enforcement vehicles will have a camera sign painted on the bonnet, the sides and rear as part of the livery which obviously will be visible and 'count' as identifying marks. In addition, Avon & Somerset never operate without either permament signs in permanent locations and deployable ones in community concern areas. You simply didn't see the signs at the time.

Netting off doesn't happen any more, hasn't done since some time in 1997. They can put them wherever they like now as they're on a fixed budget so there is supposedly no financial incentive to hide them or put them in the most profitable locations.

The 20/20 has never been approved for vehicle mounting.
Police speed camera vans do not need to be marked, the only ones who USED to need to be marked were partnership vans.
There was never any LEGAL obligation to mark anything, or have bright yellow camera housings.
Lets face it, knowing what the legal speed is on a road is hardly rocket science.....Ladymans comment, while being a shade sarcastic, was correct ?
