I have a question.

Most of our area has just been designated 20mph, but I am not sure that the signs are adequate.

As I turn off my road onto the main road around our estate, there are 20mph signs, normal size. This road leads to a mini roundabout where I turn left. There are no further signs that I have seen. At the top of this road I turn right and believe this is still 30mph.

On my drive home, when turning left into the road down to the mini roundabout, there are signs, but they are so close to the top of the road and it is a narrow road to turn into, so you need to watch out for cars turning out of the road, so as not to catch them and pedestrians, it therefore meaning that you have no chance of seeing these signs. The height of them is a factor too.

At the mini roundabout I turn right and there are school signs and also very small 20mph signs that are lost against the school signs.

The other road off this mini roundabout is also apparently 20mph, but has no further signage and is only sign posted with a 20mph as you enter from the opposite direction.

Are these signs sufficient? I would think it very easy to believe that you had left a 20mph area having negotiated a junction and no further signs are apparent, especially when, if no signs are indicating different are seen, I believed that the speed limit was therefore deemed to be 30mph.

Any comments or information would be appreciated.

Is your area a 20mph ZONE or have the speed limits been amended to 20mph? There is a difference between these 2 options wihich affects signing.

Hi Malcolm

These areas were previously 30 mph and have, since last Friday been amended. :x

Thanks Jomukuk

Have looked at link and printed off the information to try and digest later.

From a brief look through, it seems that repeater signs should be displayed as from the start of the 20mph to the mini roundabout is more than 400 metres; the road to the left at the mini roundabout is also more than 400 metres, as is the stretch from the mini roundabout to the end of the road.

The one thing is that apparently the police do not support the 20mph on the side roads, but I don't suppose that means they won't be there with their mobile speed cameras!

I've heard that the police won't/ can't enforce 20 MPH limits so I wouldn't be too worried about them. Personally, I believe that they think, like the majority of motorists, that they are poointless in the main and not really needed.

The abd link seems to imply that a 20MPH ZONE still has a 30MPH limit; the 20MPH being physically enforced.
In this area the 20MPH zones appear to be in the more affluent villages. Is this because rich people are more prone to being involved in road accidents.

I suspect it is because better educated (but possibly misguided) people are more vocal on local councils and tend to have higher paid jobs thus allowing them to live in villages. Incidentally, are there any "non-affluent" villages?

I should have said "occupied by the obscenely wealthy" rather than affluent. And as much of that wealth seems to be associated with players of football your point about education is invalid :)
