My route to work takes me on the B5470 Whaley Bridge to Macclesfield road across the Derbyshire/Cheshire border. Over the last two years they have been gradually reducing the speed limits and last week they started on the last two NSL section leaving them in a curious state. Travelling east they are correctly signed for 50mph - terminal signs and repeaters all by the book. But going west the signs are unchanged with NSL terminals and no repeaters.

So what is the legal status of the road? I didn't think that a road could have different limits in each direction but that is what the signage implies.

I will have a rant about the reasons for lowering the limit at a later date :flamethrow:

Hmm, another one bites the dust :(

So where's the nearest NSL to you now on a single-carriageway road where you actually have a hope of achieving 60? The former A625 heading east from Chapel towards the Mam Tor landslip?

Ah, Whaley Bridge - what alovely part of the world. I hope this isn't too personal, but do you live in Whaley Bridge itself or nearby, perhaps that little hamlet called Cockhard? Just wondered

Yep. We call it Rushop Edge locally and it is a nice fast run on the rare grockle free day. The A5004 (Long hill - the old A6) is a good drive too - Telford's corners are a nice fast challenge. Cat and Fiddle -the "most dangerous road in England" is already down to 50mph and they are planning a "last ditch bid to save lives" by spending £1m+ on cameras. A spokesman said "We have to do something about that road short of putting policemen up there 24/7" Since most of the accidents are to bikers (taking bikers out of the stats makes it one of the safest road in the country) I would have thought having a police presence there at weekends would be the most cost effective way of preventing accidents.

The reason that they are reducing the limit on the B5470 is because of the number of single vehicle accidents. 90% of those accidents happen on a single bend (just west of the Highwayman pub). It is a deceptive bend which looks as if it ought to be safe at 50 but in fact needs a much slower approach. Even if the new speed limit did reduce the speed to 50 accidents would still happen there, Local signing for the bend would be much more effective.
