New plan for danger junction
Paul Britton

April 21, 2009

THE most dangerous junction in Wigan is set to get safer with a £275,000 remodel.

Engineering work has started on all four legs of the Kirkhall Lane junction with Atherleigh Way in Leigh.

A network of pedestrian crossings will be built.

The junction is used by thousands of schoolchildren and shoppers. It has the worst casualty record in Wigan.

In the past three years, 28 people have been injured there - pedestrians and motorists. Temporary traffic lights will feature and some roads could close.

Coun Peter Smith said: "It's great news. This new layout will really improve the safety record."

The work is due to finish in July.

At least they are trying engineering before a s/cam though

Hope I chose the right forum for this one? Tis a "grey area" as it would slot well in other fora on this board..

I can only hope that this remodel is done using qualified engineers who are able to exercise thier independance and produce a viable result.

The work I did at TfL was pretty ham fisted and until I pointed it out actually created hazards.

Likewise where I live in Chelmsford, there have been 're-engineering exercises' on ped crossings that have lead to two fatalities.

Here's hoping they get this one right !

Forgot to add, the link doesn't work.

They could still put one in, so capitalising on the 'bias on selection' the other improvements bring, so resulting with: "reduction of KSI at this camera site"
